Entering my first competition: Unsure which category to submit under

I brewed up this "Mexican Vienna Lager" and plan on entering it in competition (my first!): https://www.homebrewtalk.com/threads/mexican-lager.254955/ The recipe says SRM is between 6 and 7. Beersmith calculates it as 5.5 on my equipment and based on an SRM chart that I have it probably is...

    Tapcooler thread size question

Wishing I would have done this research before I put the order in because finding a M10X1Male to UNF 7/16-20 Male (in stainless no less) is proving difficult. I can find one that that goes to female but then I'd have to have another MFL-MFL adapter which seems like I am adding complexity for no...

    Tapcooler thread size question

Anyone know what the threading is for the beer-in fitting on the top of the tapcooler? I have a 1/4" flare to 1/4" flare extension hose that I use for transfers from my intertaps (using the ball lock spout) and if I can get a male flare to that threading I'd have an extension for it. EDIT...

I just had to dump my first batch after nearly a year off because I am an idiot.

Update: I re-brewed the same recipe two days after I had to dump the previous one due to my stupidity. Ten day ferment followed by cold-crash, keg, and force carb. The result may be my best beer yet. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Bad aroma hops ... correct with dry hopping?

I was brewing a batch yesterday that included 2 oz of Brewers Gold; 0.5 oz for 15 min and 1.5 oz for 3 min. I opened the first ounce and used half for the first addition. I opened the second ounce in prep for the second addition and it smelled off. Like really off. Like moldy, musty damp...

    Vienna Lager Mexican Lager

I just brewed this with Kveik Lutra. Brewed 4/25 Fermented at 72 F Cold Crashed 5/2 Kegged 5/7 It's been on 30 psi since this morning (10 hrs). I was curious so I pulled a half pint. Damn! (in a good way) Fairly clean. Great color. Delicious. Maybe not as clean as true lager (so far) but...

Voss Kveik how pronounced is the orange flavour ?

I just used Voss for a Kona Big Wave clone. I fermented it in a chamber at 98 F with fermentation temps hitting 103 F (measured on the outside of the plastic bucket). Like @Coookies58, I wouldn't say "orange" was the result but instead say "citrus" which was goal (accentuate the tropical citrus...

Help saving a batch: Pineapple Express IPA

Amazing what 18 hours of keg hopping will do. Definitely coming more into balance. I try to learn something on every brew and this one is a lesson in BU/GU ratio. What tasted really sweet suddenly isn't so much any more when you pump up the bitterness. I ended up putting in about 1.5 oz of...

Help saving a batch: Pineapple Express IPA

It's an interesting experiment in early versus late hopping. The bittering and base flavor are there (it actually tastes "sweet" like wort does pre-pitch but has an FG of 1.011) but has so little aroma. I'm going to see what the LHBS has today and try to save via keg hopping.

Help saving a batch: Pineapple Express IPA

I recently brewed "Pineapple Express IPA" which was the recipe used for and "American IPA" in the "Homebrew Challenge" on YouTube: Boil Size: 7.60 gal Post Boil Volume: 6.50 gal Batch Size (fermenter): 6.00 gal Bottling Volume: 5.00 gal Estimated OG: 1.067 SG Estimated Color: 6.9 SRM...

Blonde Ale Kona Big Wave Golden Ale clone

Kegged and carbed! I have to pickup some actual Big Wave to compare but first taste has me thinking it is going to be really close or better than the original.

submerging corny kegs in heated water bath for kveik fermentation?

I have been experimenting with kveik and had to make accommodations in my heating "chamber" which is a box built from scrap 2-by and plywood. I have a 40W heater which I sit loosely around my plastic ferm bucket in the chamber. That just by itself can get the chamber up to around 85 F in my...

    Pseudo cold crash

I had it the other way because I haven't quite gotten to the point of doing starters reliably yet and I didn't want to be doubling up on yeast packets ... hence, single pitch into a single tun of cooled wort. Building up starters are on my to-do list (probably before fermenting in kegs) so I'd...

    Pseudo cold crash

I haven't done this because it would require me to either scale UP to 10 gallons post boil volume, cool, pitch and then spit into two kegs or scale DOWN to 3.5-4 gallons equivalent packaged into a single keg. Either way is a significant deviation in the amount of finished product that comes out...

    Pseudo cold crash

Any lowering of temperature will cause the beer to contracting resulting in a lowering of the pressure in the vessel. If you have a bubbler or a blow off this will result in suck back unless precaution is taken. Since I currently ferment in plastic buckets that have some "give", when I cold...

Everything going wrong this week... infection? Help?

I've had stuff like that before with no issue. When I would then rack to keg it would get pulled to the sides of the bucket as the beer level dropped.

Grinding a tail off a shank?

Doesn't seem like anyone makes a fitting that screws on to the end of a shank and gives a right angled PTC port. I've seen a shank that comes with a right angled duotight compatible end but the tailpiece doesn't seem to be available on its own.

Grinding a tail off a shank?

I just stumbled upon this. I do have access to a drill press might even have a good countersink bit. Cut off the tail close to the back of the shank then use a drill press and countersink bit to give a nice clean cut.

Grinding a tail off a shank?

Given a stainless shank with an integrated straight nipple is it possible to grind the nipple off and put a new angled nipple, washer, and nut on the back? Current shank picture is attached. Potential parts...
