    Help me troubleshoot my fermentation

I have to check my notes again, now that I'm thinking about it, OG may have been 1.062, but definitely not lower than that. As far as my volumes, I'm boiling in a 4 gal pot, I can only fit about 3.5gallons in there without major boil over, then I lose about 1 gal to boil off. Then once in the...

    Help me troubleshoot my fermentation

I aerate with an aquarium pump, but no diffusion stone. I know I need a stone. I think I shook the carboy a bit too, but not a ton. I mashed at 156 for 1hr. I pitched a whole packet, for 2.5 ga batch.

    Help me troubleshoot my fermentation

Assistance would be appreciated. I just bottled an oatmeal stout after 4.5 weeks in primary. OG was 1.07, FG was a disappointing 1.03, or perhaps a tiny bit lower. Yeast was safale s-04. I don't have a ferm chamber, just the space behind a door that is usually around 63-64. The stout had a...

Where can I get just an Oxygen Stone

Does anyone know if a a standard aquarium pump be able to push air through a .5 micron diffusion stone? The Austin Home Brew site says the following, "The holes in the stone are too fine to use it to aerate the wort with an aeration pump", also, on the 2 micron stone, it says, "The air pump...

    Fermenting question

My only complaint with the mrbeer keg, is the bottling process. In my experience having a separate bottling bucket dramatically reduces the amount of trub that makes it into the bottle. That being said, it still is fun. I would recommend a 4 week primary to really let the yeast cake compact...

    Good bye old friend

my first one only lasted 3 batches! I'm being more careful now.

    Initial Fermentation Time

Hi, I've finished batch #7, and I have a question on fermentation times. Due to money constraints, I'm stuck doing 2-2.5 gallon batches (AG). For yeast, I've been pitching a single smack pack, vial or packet of yeast, with no starter or hydration. My question is as follows: How long...

topping up 20mins into boil with 2 cups of second runnings

Thanks. I now have 2.5 gal of edwort's haus pale bubbling away happily. I actually hit my og almost exactly, which never happens. Maybe im starting to get better at this thing. What a novel concept.

topping up 20mins into boil with 2 cups of second runnings

Even though its only 2.5 gallons post boil?

topping up 20mins into boil with 2 cups of second runnings

After i drain the second runnings into my boil kettle, i always set my mash tun to drain into a measuring cup. I figured i would save thw wort for starters or something, although i never wind up using it. So tonight, im watching my wort boil for 20 mins, and then i look over at the measuring...

    Disappointed in 1st beer

I found that the 2 Mr. Beer kits that I did, tasted very similar. I used the same stock Yeast that came with the cans of extract, but the recipes were very different (scottish Wee Heavy and the West Coast Pale Ale), and they both just tasted like yeast too me. I think it's the design of the...

    friends wedding beer

This actually got the gears going in my head - I'm expecting a son at the end of April, and this could be something fun. A "coming home from the hospital beer", and "Survived the first year" beer.

    friends wedding beer

I vote for a partigyle - make a big beer and a small beer. They're not going to want to get tanked on a barleywine on their wedding night anyway.

where to drink in Tarrytown, NY?

The Green Growler in Croton-on-Hudson has growler service, and this week will have 8 taps from Founders brewery. It's not really a bar though. If you want to drive a bit south to Yonkers, there is the Yardhouse, which as 100 beers on Tap. The Green Growler: Craft Beer Grocery | Supporting...

    Outdoor brewing and sunlight

Well they should be. The real question is, why do certain breweries insist on using clear/green bottles?

    Low fermentation temperature - ale

I have an amber ale sitting at the top of the stairs To my unfinished basement. This area doesn't get heat so it's usually cooler than the rest of my place, somewhere in the low 60's, which I figured is good for active fermentation, since I'm shooting for 68. My problem is that it's been super...

1St All grain brew - fermentation slow down?

My inlaws live in NY, so I stopped by a place in Croton-on-hudson called the Green Growler. It was a pretty cool place, they have a good amount of home brew stuff, plus they have some specialty stuff on tap that they offer with their Growler service. I picked up an additional better bottle...

1St All grain brew - fermentation slow down?

I agree, this site rules. I've done so much researching on this site over the last few weeks. I have another batch in primary (brewed last week), and I went to the not-so-local HBS and got ingredients for another two batches. Hopefully Saturday or Sunday I will be brewing as well!

1St All grain brew - fermentation slow down?

Just an update, that no body probably cares about, but for any noobs out there like myself... Two weeks in primary, two weeks in bottles at room temp, 24 hours in the fridge...I had to try one, b/c the wait was killing me, and it tastes like beer! No off tastes at all! Just pretty damn good...
