Making a grain mill. Question about rollers.

A machinist at my work is making a grain mill for me from a plan I found online. Right now only one of the two rollers will turn via a drill. The rollers will ride on sleeve bearings. How important is it that the 2nd wheel be powered? I have literally $0 in this thing so far and hate to...

Adding yeast to old beer before bottling, how much?? Doing this today.

Pretty much exactly what I ended I up doing. I used about a 1/2 pack, put it on my stir plate with a bit of clean water for about 1/2 hour. Put this in the bucket with priming sugar solution and racked beer on top, got a very good swirl during transfer. Now, when I bottle 53 gallons of Wee...

Adding yeast to old beer before bottling, how much?? Doing this today.

I have a Russian Imperial Stout that has been sitting for about 10 months. Plan to bottle today. It is a 5 gallon batch. I have been told to add some proofed, dry yeast to the bottling bucket. How much dry yeast should I add? Doing this today, any info is greatly appreciated. Lakedawgs

Weldless bulkhead in keg, 2 orings or 1?

Howdy Putting a couple of weldless bulkheads in an HLT keg and have seen many posts using one oring in the inside and other posts using two orings; one on inside and one on outside. I'm leaning toward using only one on the inside. Tell me which is better and why. Thanks much, Lakedawgs

DIY Simple semi automated bottle filler ($40)

We have two bottling spigots on our buckets like you do but put the bottling wands on the spigots with only a couple of inches of tubing. Put the full bottling bucket on a milk crate on the table, wants hang off the side and away we go. Very easy and your only cost and construction is to buy...

Looking for plans for a 2 stage cold room/fermentation chamber

I want to build a cold room/fermentation chamber. Me and a buddy need to get a better handle on temp control during fermentation. I am thinking 4'x7'. I have a window unit A/C and temp controller. This will go in my garage and be made with 2" insulation board with roll insulation sandwiched...

    What is causing this fading?

HI 2nd year garden, hops are growing pretty good. Starting to produce some nice cones. Cannot figure out why some of the leaves are faded in color. Any thoughts are appreciated. Matt

DIY Dual Roller Grain Mill, couple of questions for those that have done it.

Thanks, This is what I was thinking on both, but was not sure. Some mills have a single wheel adjustment for sure. I, like you, have not had a chance to inspect one yet. I have the roller shaft knurled, just need to cut it in two pieces and mill the ends. I have a machinist at my company helping...

DIY Dual Roller Grain Mill, couple of questions for those that have done it.

I am building a dual roller grain mill and have a couple of questions about specifics. I have read a handful of good DIY threads and have my rollers knurled. Couple of things I am not solid on. 1) Most mills I see use an dual eccentric knob setup to adjust the gap of the rollers. Can someone...

    Bottle conditioned yeast storage question

About to get a case or two of Heady Topper in a couple of weeks. What is the best way to preserve the beer for optimal yeast harvest from the can? Keep the beer in the fridge or keep it at room temp? Thanks

    did i ruin my beer?

You are perfectly fine. You over shot your OG and your abv% will be a bit higher, no problem at all. You apparently got good extraction, congrats.

Chris White and Jamil's book, Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation. Personally, I have learned more from that book than any other regarding brewing.

    Local Brew in Chicago

We were just there for an event a couple of weeks ago (from Indiana). I really liked Revolution Brewing's, 'Anti-Hero IPA' and 'Eugene Porter', both outstanding beers. Also, 3 Floyds in Munser, IN (not too far) is a must visit. If you are a hop head, you will find nirvana here.

Hop aroma, last long in bottle chilled or not chilled?

Interesting thought. Without getting too technical, hops are loosely based on aroma or bittering. I am more interested in aroma hops, but any info someone can give would be appreciated.
