Picking up a bourbon barrel, got a few questions.

I have been rolling the barrel once every week or so. Peeked inside a couple of days ago and there is still a good amount of bourbon inside, I would guess a pint +.

New to batch sparge and stainless braid, need help!

Thanks for the warning but it is metal. I saw the metal looking, plastic ones for sale. When I cut this one and also when I crimped the end, it is for sure metal.

Cool, thanks, I look forward to doing that on my next batch Saturday.

New to batch sparge and stainless braid, need help!

What do you mean by 'add rice hulls around the braid'? I plan to add them to a my grain bill but how do yours stay around the braid with stirring and such?

New to batch sparge and stainless braid, need help!

I agree with creating a good grain filter. I am going to try the 'slowly draining the vourlof' think and then fully open the valve and see how that works.

New to batch sparge and stainless braid, need help!

HI Recent convert from Brew In A Bag to a 70qt Coleman Xtreme with a stainless braid cooler. On my 3rd batch and have had trouble with my draining of mash. I seem to get a gallon or so and then the runnings basically stop. I have to jack with the braid with my paddle to get things going...

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

OK, had a good brewday but also, a lot of learning with the new setup. On the first 'no sparge' batch I mashed in with 12 gals, filling the cooler to the max once grain was added. Only got 8 gals of first runnings so I added 3 gallons of sparge and only got 1.5 gallons out of it. On the...

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

That is freakin' brilliant! We planned on a small beer from the 'no sparge' batch, but this is the way we will go. I still plan to run the #s on the 'sparge' vrs 'no sparge' batches, (taking the added sugary strike water in to account), so I can determine the best method for the third batch...

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

I realized the 10% absorption error via another poster later in thread. Makes a big difference for sure. Reason for the odd size batch is that a buddy and I have bought a freshly dumped KY bourbon barrel. My share is 20 gallons. With the angels share and wanting to be on the heavy side I...

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

Are you saying a 'no sparge' batch will likely give the same #s as a small sparge?

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

Really looking forward to start mashing and sparging in a cooler but my first 3 brews will be monster stouts so I want to have my #s and thoughts in the right direction from the start.

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

I like that idea so far. I was thinking 10% absorption not .1 gal/pound of grain, thanks for the clarification, big difference.

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

So you lower the qts/per pound formula a bit for big beers, that is really interesting. Is that simply so you can have a bit more sparge water or something else?

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

I thought about doing a partigyle but this 8 gallon batch is the first of 3 I am doing for my share of a bourbon barrel addition. Unless I hear different I think I am going to strike with about 8 gallons (just under 1qt per gallon), and sparge with about 3.5 gallons.

Another batch sparge question. Trouble with a big beer.

I have been using the BIAB method for a couple of years with good success but am moving to a cooler for mashing and batch sparging to improve my efficiency. I have read a ton but cannot wrap my mind around the strike and sparge water volumes for a big beer. We are using a 70qt converted...

Picking up a bourbon barrel, got a few questions.

Picking up a 53 gallon bourbon barrel Friday. Been doing some good research but have some questions about conflicting things I have read. The barrel was dumped of bourbon about 2 weeks ago. We will fill it with fermented beer in about 6wks. Concerning not letting the barrel get to dry, I...

Barrel aging, proper order of styles?

HI My brew club has a couple of barrels we have aged a few beers with good luck. 4 of us want to buy a fresh bourbon barrel and barrel age a few beers. Looking for some input on the proper brewing order for different styles. RIS Belgian Strong Porter Brown IIPA Pale Ale We are not...

Whole hog roasting, question about size.

We are planning a whole hog roast on a horizontal smoker for a brewclub party in a couple of months. Can someone tell me, roughly how long a 45-55# split whole hog be on the grill? I, personally, don't think our grill will be large enough. Also, any tips, recipes, thoughts would be...
