    Vitality Starters

Here’s what the Int’l Dairy Association says about pasteurization: Temperature Time Pasteurization Type 63ºC (145ºF)* 30 minutes Vat Pasteurization 72ºC (161ºF)* 15 seconds High temperature short time Pasteurization (HTST) 89ºC (191ºF) 1.0 second Higher-Heat Shorter Time (HHST) 90ºC...

    Vitality Starters

I like the idea of using pre-boil wort. I wonder about the need for boiling, particularly if you mash out. A typical 30-60 minute mash at 150F should be sterile already and boiling would lengthen the time to chill to pitching temp. Your success with only 2-2.5 hours of spinning time, which is...

    Vitality Starters

The idea behind vitality starters is to move your yeast through the lag phase in optimum condition by creating a starter and placing it on a stir plate for about 4 hours. This provides an ideal environment for synthesis of sterols and unsaturated fatty acids that are necessary growth factors...

    A44 Kveiking -- whoa!

How did you measure the current SG? If it's a Tilt or similar in-fermenter hydrometer, you might consider gently rocking your fermenter, in case the hydrometer is lodged up against something and throwing off the readings. The speed of fermentation doesn't surprise me but the attenuation doesn't...

    PicoBrew Zymatic

Thanks Trevor. Yes, it was shared in reply to a post that I had made about my issue. I should have thought to share it here for those not in that Facebook group. Thanks for doing that, Trevor.

    PicoBrew Zymatic

Will definitely pay it forward,. having already benefited from others who have shared their hard-earned knowledge.

    PicoBrew Zymatic

Ahh, I see. Oh well. Scratch that option. I've been looking at food safe adhesives for acrylic and although it's actually quite toxic during application, Weld-on 3 is a solvent which actually melts the surfaces of the pieces being mated, then evaporates. Seems like it has potential to either...

    PicoBrew Zymatic

I have just acquired an early model Zymatic which has a sizable crack in the step filter. I know that the conventional wisdom is to seal them with super glue from the outside. That seems a bit difficult here as it is located on the back wall of the grain section, just above the shelf which holds...

New Product Giveaway🎁 - Inkbird Brewing Heat Mat

Hey everyone. This appears to be another excellent Inkbird product and a generous giveaway, but understand that this is a 6.5 watt heat belt. Perfect for a 2 gallon jar of kombucha or maybe pushing your 20L batch from 66F to 68F, but if you're planning to use it to get a beer fermenting with...

PicoBrew Z - Any thoughts for a new brewer?

Just guessing here, but if you can separate a 220V Z2 into two 110V Z1s, they're probably just using the 220V circuit as a convenient away to get two high amperage 110V circuits to units that are stacked. Effectively, a 220V circuit is just two 110V circuits from different phases combined in a...

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

Define "pretty accurate". I think being within .2 is pretty accurate.

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

I agree with your points. I notice that if I enter my salt additions from Bru'n Water in Brewfather, the resulting profiles match, so the calculations similar. But for now, I don't trust Brewfather's auto calculation feature.

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

Yes, I do chill my samples. I use minimal volumes to allow for quick cooling and keep a small bowl of ice water handy for chilling quickly. My pH meter usually shows my samples to be in the 20-23 C range.

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

This sort of phenomenon is something I've encountered using automatic water calculations in Brewfather -- too many additions to achieve the result. Not always, but sometimes. It's why I prefer using Bru'n Water. In truth, I usually use two tools to do the calculations because it's also fairly...

Low Stout pH; Below Predicted in Bru'n Water

I often have found that the pH calculations are the least precise aspect of virtually all of the recipe tools, including Brewfather, Bru'n Water, and Beersmith 3. It's been my experience that I do not need to add all of the acid predicted by the tools, so I have started adjusting my target pH...

SS Brewtech Grain Mill Rollers not Parallel

Sieve test? Sure... for adjusting the mill gap to achieve optimal mashing and lautering, but not to assess whether a mill's rollers are parallel. Their responses remind me of the scene in Elf where Walter Hobbs is informed that thousands of copies of a children's book his firm has printed are...

SS Brewtech Grain Mill Rollers not Parallel

I have one of the SS mills, which I purchased in a lot of items from a nano brewery that failed to start due to COVID-19. I had seen the aforementioned videos on YouTube, so I did a quick inspection with a feeler gauge before buying it. The gap on mine isn't perfect, but it didn't seem...

    Mill Table Grist Dust Mitigation

ROI for the cabinet was a non-issue for me, even though I'm 60 years old. I used reclaimed oak plywood from an old entertainment center that I couldn't give away a few years ago. I knocked it apart and figured I'd use it for some utilitarian purpose. This project was perfect. I didn't even need...

    Mill Table Grist Dust Mitigation

I have to agree on the static. It's amazing how much grain clings to the underside of my milling cabinet's top, beneath the mill. I suspect that it is due to the unequal rotational speeds of the rollers which essentially rubs the husk. The crush I'm getting with unconditioned malt is really...

    Line free kegs?

Kegland makes flow control ball lock disconnects. The first generation introduced a significant amount of restriction, even fully open. There's a 2nd gen version which is claimed to resolve that issue, but as of a few months ago, they hadn't reached the USA yet. William's Brewing carries them.
