This is done in the brewery. The Glacial Lake Brewers will hold its annual group brew day on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Block North Brew Pub. This event is FREE to anyone interested in free wort to take home to brew their own beer. The club will make a giant batch of base wort and folks take...

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

Needed a Marzen, split batch virtually same hops, but fermented one with novalager and other with 34/70. Kept fermentation temp mid 60s and then kegged in fridge 5 weeks. Served at our fall harvest brew fest. People liked both but the most popular was the 34/70. They were both better after...

So what do you most miss/DON'T miss about your beginning brewing experiences?

What i miss is the wonder at the magic and science that is brewing. How at the end of a few weeks saying I made this and it is tasty. I do miss how easy cleanup was doing BIAB versus the AIO but being able to watch the kids and brew made the AIO worth it. I don't miss having to lift the brew...

i have to keep fizzy yellow beer on tap.

For summer I keep cream ale on tap as it, with the pound of flaked corn and the liberty hops has flavor for me and others will try it. For an easy drinking lager I buy Grain Belt Premium. I find it's floral notes and low bitterness easy for busch/bud light drinkers to handle and I like it too.

Need ideas for stovetop brewing smell

We all love the smell until the hops get added. That is when my wife would go outside to garden or would be gone shopping. once i had a dark star burner I moved to the garage. As long as temp is 0 Fahrenheit or above I am plenty warm. You can also small batch brew on an induction plate and...

    What's your "burn" rate?

I believe i am my own worst critic. The one beer i made that just did not do it for me was a scotch heavy. Did not have as much flavor as I hoped. Bottled half, gave it to my neice. Her husband shared it with coworkers a month later and they all loved it. I have yet to brew an IPA so maybe that...

Time to Get Real About Eating Spent Grain

I have a big compost pile at back of the yard. I dump it on there and let the deer stir up my pile as the eat from it.

    Blonde ale = Kölsch ?

It is why if possible I will make a larger batch and split into my smaller fermenters. Pitch two different yeasts and see which people prefer. Well me too 🫡

An appeal to Northeast U.S. Homebrewers

Best names for your beer batch?

I split up 20 gallons of wort for brown ale into three batches. One done using English hops and S04, second American hops and US-05, third using American hops and Nottingham yeast and a quart of maple syrup. Named them Larry, Darrell and Darryl. Yes Larry was the one with syrup.

    Flies in the Air Lock

As stated relatively flavorless and a bottle costs $5. It also happens to be what my wife sprays on fabric when quilting so costs me nothing at all.

    Dampfbier and co-fermentation US-05 & Munich Classic

So does it then come out as a clear beer with slight banana/clove flavors? Never had one so not sure if I should try.

    Help, is this mold?

The plastic bucket spigot are cheap to purchase so tend to have one in my cabinet at all times. That way if I crack one I can replace it. If i am unsure if I can get it clean enough I have changed them out after I use the fermenter alot. Cheap insurance considering the time and money in a...

    Is the beer wort infected?

It looks like you brewed a darker beer. I have found the krausen for some yeast on darker brews are more dense and take longer to drop. More then likely another day and you would have have had most of it fall.

    Flies in the Air Lock

Starsan tends to bubble out the little holes on airlock cap keeping them out which is one of the reasons for the airlock. Just did a brown ale with maple syrup added. This fermented so hard it kept foaming out all the starsan. Switched with one filled with cheapest vodka. Problem solved. Did...

    Club free wort day

Well I went with three buckets planning to come home with 12 gallons. The few people who said they were going did not show so I came home with a few buckets more. Approx 24 gallons!! With family requiring attention I boiled and chilled from 3pm until and set the third fermenter in the basement...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you go to a club wort share, come up a few people short and instead of going home with 12 gallons of Brown Ale wort you go home with 24. Oh and still sad watching 10 gallons more go down the drain from the brewery mash tun.

What To Look For in a Grain Mill?

I bought a Hull Wrecker from NB and used it many years. Worked fine for Biab. Now I have a Monster mill 3 pro. An acquaintance that brewed quit and when he heard I brewed he gave it to me for free. I believe my beer is better and more consistent crush and efficency. Oh and I kept the hull...
