    Bottle Bombs?

Thanks. I won't be jumping into all-grain for quite a while. Right now I'm enjoying all the kits from Northern Brewer and small batches from Mr. Beer. So far I've done a Block Party and a Blue Loon from NB with really good results. I've got their Phat Tyre and Fresh Squish IPA ready to brew...

    Bottle Bombs?

Hi all. Right now I am only using the Northern Brewer LME kits and am really liking them. I keep reading about bottle bombs and have been putting my bottles in a big Tupperware container for the first 2 weeks of bottle conditioning just in case. Has anyone experienced these bottle bombs with...

    Ready to bottle?

Thanks. I went ahead and bottled. There was more yeast in the bottom of the secondary bucket and it was very clear with the right coloring. I'll forget the secondary from now on and just keep it in the primary for at least 2 weeks.

    Ready to bottle?

Hi all. I have a Blue Moon clone from Northern Brewer in the secondary fermenter right now. It was in the primary for 7 days and had stopped all bubbling and the yeast cake was completely at the bottom. The hydrometer reading when I transferred was 1.009 and it is still at 1.009. Is there...

Found a cheap plastic "carboy" option

Working good so far. Got good bubble action in the airlock so the cap is sealed.

Found a cheap plastic "carboy" option

Hi all. While walking through SAMS yesterday, we came upon their 4 gallon water dispenser refills for $4. I'm sure it'll only give a few rounds before hitting the recycle bin, but for $4 that includes 4 gallons of filtered water and a sealable cap you can't beat it. The 3 piece airlocks I...

    11th Day Fermentation Hydrometer Reading

Here we go. Fingers crossed for no bottle bombs. Do they need to be conditioned in a relatively warm place as well?

    11th Day Fermentation Hydrometer Reading

Hi all. My Northern Brewer Block Party Amber Ale is on day 11 of fermentation. The original gravity of the wort was 1.032 which was lower than the 1.042 projected on the recipe sheet and some attributed that to me not stirring or shaking up the mixture after adding 1 1/2 gallons to equal the...

    This stuff smells really strong

Thanks. I am surprised I kept it closed for 6 days. I cracked open the lid an inch or so a couple times to make sure something was happening but that was it. I can definitely see the appeal of a glass container. Might be in the market now.

    This stuff smells really strong

I was impressed by my Mr Beer Golden Ale kit. I found Northern Brewer on this site and pieced together a kit similar to theirs for about $100 and ordered their Block Party 5 gallon recipe kit. I’m planning to use the Mr Beer mini keg for small batches.

    This stuff smells really strong

Do you mean 10-14 "more" days or 10-14 since fermentation started? I'm on day 6 now.

    This stuff smells really strong

Hi all. I've got a batch of american amber ale and a week into fermentation it looks different than the Mr. Beer kit I first brewed. It has a really strong and sweet smell. I didn't want to mess with it to take another hydrometer reading. Does the pic look like you'd expect? There was more...

    How much room for fermentation

Found my 6 gallon bucket for $17. We are a baseball family so having a Rawlings bucket just fits.

    Mash vs Wort

I've been looking at recipes for distilled spirits and see that the mash used seems to be very similar to beer wort. Can someone explain the difference? It seems like you could bottle the filtered mash after fermentation and get something fairly tasty out of it.

    Hydrometer Help

Makes sense. I didn’t have another spoon sanitized so I let it naturally mix. Next time I’ll have another spoon ready to go to mix it up. I’ve watched enough videos on YouTube for this recipe to know it went as well as it could have. I don’t see myself moving to all grain for quite some time...

    Hydrometer Help

I have fairly low standards (so far) for beer so I doubt I won't like it. I've got friends and neighbors that will get the 5 gallons gone fairly quick so it won't last long either way.

    Hydrometer Help

Yes, I soaked the container in hot water for 20 minutes and rinsed out with more hot water. I'd say I got 99% of it out.

    Hydrometer Help

I started with 2.5 gallons and added the LME and hops, then did a 60 minute boil. Put 2 gallons in the bucket and added the wort and finished with enough to make 5 gallons. We'll see how it works out. It all mixed well with no scorching or boil-overs.

    Hydrometer Help

Honestly I forgot to take the hydrometer reading until about 10 minutes after adding the yeast. Would that change it?

    Hydrometer Help

It was an LME kit with a grain steep and dry hops. I was as meticulous as I could be with the temps in the instructions. It's my second brew, but the first was a Mr Beer kit. That ended up pretty tasty.
