    Overcarbed stout

My god, what's the man supposed to drink in the mean time?! LOL

How do I harvest and wash yeast?

So, in the linked thread the author says "Then, again being careful not to disturb the stuff on the bottom, fill up the small Mason jars. Fill them all the way up." Is he saying fill the mason jars from the larger jar or from the carboy? I'm assuming from the larger jar, but want to be sure for...

    Thanks, all. Very informative.

    Keg Type Question

I've got a line on three 5 gal Corny kegs. The owner says he has fittings for both ball and pin. My question is, are the kegs themselves interchangeable? In other words, what makes a keg a pin lock or a ball lock, the fittings, which you can remove, or is pin/ball built into the keg's body...

I need ideas to keep carboys and buckets at ale ferment temp

I use a Cool Brew bag. You can google it. $50 something shipped. Holds my 6.5 gallon carboy with the airlock in it. Use 2 liter bottles of ice to control temp. My house is 78* during the day, but the bag stays at a constant 65* with one ice bottle. Just need to swap out ice bottle every 24 hours.

Roach in jug used for airlock

LOL, and to think, a couple hundred years ago, the first monk to work in the morning had to fish the dead rats out of the vats!

I May be a Professional Idiot!

Well, my starter certainly liked my wort! Woke up and checked the primary first thing. Opened my Cool Brew bag and what to my wondering eyes should appear...a blow off mess LOL. Fortunately, the airlock and the top of the bag saved me from a worse mess to clean up. Got it all back in shape and...

I May be a Professional Idiot!

My thoughts exactly. May be my best batch ever! I'll let you know after I've done a few dozen LOL.

I May be a Professional Idiot!

Well, I started my second ever batch today. And I've come to the realization that I'm an idiot...maybe even professional level LOL! Everything started off just fine. I started my yeast starter yesterday. I sanitized my equipment today just before I started my pot boiling. Put in the grains...

    newbie stir plate questions

I never looked at the milliamperes of either my fan or power supply, so couldn't tell you. I'd just wire them up and find out. As long as you're watching, if anything starts to smoke, you can unplug it.

    newbie stir plate questions

I built mine with a 60mm fan instead of the 120mm you're looking at. I have a friend that fixes computers and he gave me a couple. Fan is a 12 volt and I'm using a 5 volt charger from an old Bluetooth earpiece. I have a 2 liter flask and a 1 inch stir bar can bring the vortex to the bottom...

What I did for beer today

Let my wife go to the casino so she won't pitch a fit when I buy something. Went to two stores looking for a 4 foot propane tank hose. Bought one only to find the burner end has a male fitting...need female, sheesh! Guess I'll be making another run later this week to be able to brew on...

Johan, what are trying to do, infect my beer with this pic? J/k LOL

Is this normal/what caused this/am I being paranoid?

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I knew the crud ring was from the krausen. I was more worried about the foam coming back in the 2nd pic, as it had all dissipated a couple days before.

Is this normal/what caused this/am I being paranoid?

Sorry, both pics WERE the same...darn you, photobucket copy! I've finally gotten the correct 2nd image in there.

Is this normal/what caused this/am I being paranoid?

My NB Caribou Slobber extract is 12 days into a 2 week primary. A couple days ago, I was trying to impress my wife with my my wares...of course, all she had to say when she saw it was "Eww!", but I digress. After she was done commenting, I decided to take a pic just for my records and this is...

    Brewing in Texas heat.

If you haven't and are willing to spend ~$55.00, Google Cool Brewing. It's an insulated bag large enough to hold a 6.5 gal (although I swear mine's closer to 8 gal) carboy with an airlock in it. 2 liter and 500ml bottles of water that have been frozen are used to regulate the temp. My house is...

    Caribou Slobber fermentation time

I'm brewing some Caribou right now, also. The instructions call for 1-2 weeks in the primary, 1-2 weeks in secondary, and another 1-2 weeks in the bottle.

    Feementing Temp Range

No, I added about a gallon to the boil when the level start to dip below the thermometer probe, which sits right at the 5 gallon mark. So, my end of boil amount was almost exactly 5 gallons. Minus the amount in the bottom of the kettle, I moved about 4 gallons to the primary. My friend who...
