    Aerating Question(first brew)

That's plenty usually just transfer to a bucket from my boil pot then from the bucket to a plastic Carboy.

    FG Check

I use a turkey baster to get the beer out but I tried to use my maple syrup hydrometer cup to drop the hydrometer but it bottoms out. I think I need the beer thief. I think I might have one not knowing what it was for. Thanks

    FG Check

What do people that use a Carboy use to check Fg. I have a hydrometer but what do you put the beer in to check. I'm afraid that if I just check in the Carboy I will lose my hydrometer. Thanks

Cocoa Powder addition to a porter

I'm doing a coffee porter with chocolate flavor and used cocoa nibs in my secondary and the chocolate and coffee flavor are amazing

    Fresh Orange Peels

I've always read on here to just use zest the white part of the peel will give off flavors. I'm making a chocolate orange bock and I put the zest in some vodka and soaked for about an hour then added to last 10 min if boil I plan to do the same thing the last week of secondary.

    2 out of 3 didn't carbonate

I've read and it has worked for me on all my batches to add priming sugar just as you add your beer to the bottling bucket. Let the siphon hose from the fermenter or secondary sit at the bottom of the bottling bucket and this will create a swirling motion In the beer which for me mixes the...

    Cool thanks!!

    Repitch??

I just brewed a Bock and my question is should i repitch yeast? The krausen looked good and now I have trub at the bottom. I had some activity with the airlock but every other brew I did I had good bubbling and frequently. This brew didn't have a lot of activity and not more that about 36 hours...

    Should I rehydrate yeast?

Somthing I didn't know and never saw instructions for is to aerate the beer before pitching yeast and do this before transferring to the fermenting jug or bucket such as transferring to a bucket from the brew pot then transferring to a Carboy or another bucket. This give the yeast plenty of O2...

Mole is visiable after 48 hours.

Just a suggestion from a new brewer I'm on my 5th brew, but I've heard and am now reading the John Palmer home brewing book and it's easy to understand the sciences of brewing and the book really spells out how to brew and has easy recipes. Hope this helps

    First attempt at home brewing

I'd give it at least two weeks before considering checking. I've read a lot of kits want you to bottle after a week but keep In mind they want you to buy more kits.

    Coffee Porter

It was a kit and when I tried It I could definitly taste the coffee flavoring it was actually a "spice kit" that had ground coffee and some cocoa bits that went into the boil at the last 15 min. I Was thinking of adding cocoa nibs last week of secondary before bottling and bottle conditioning as...

    Coffee Porter

I'm brewing a coffee porter and I just went into the secondary. I'm adding cocoa nibs so my question is how much and how long?? Should I go the entire time in secondary with them? I've read that too long will make the beer more bitter. I tried it and the coffee flavor made it already bitter ...

I couldn't stand it any longer. I had to look.

This is funny because I did the exact same thing except maybe I checked it a few times when I did my first brew and it came out excellent but then I bought two 6 gallon carboys so I could watch everything happening and I only use a bucket now for bottling.

    Sampling

Thanks for all that i might just go one more week then go secondary for 3 weeks and use the nibs the last week before bottling and perhaps upon transfer to secondary I may accidentally spill a little into a sampling glass

    Sampling

How long should I let my beer sit in the primary before I can try a little sample?? Obviously I would allow the built up carbon dioxide to escape but couldn't I just add sugar to restart a fermentation to build it up again to fill the headspace? I'm brewing a coffee porter and it's been sealed...
