    What are you drinking now?

Mostly been on the wine due to it being almost solely relatively generic macro lager around here, but spotted these in the local Eroski and decided I fancied a Belgian. I do have some "Spanish Bock" beers on the fridge too. Let's see if they're any good.

    Boil length

I do modern 30 minute boils for almost every style I produce, with the exceptions of Bocks and other malty lagers, and things like barleywines.

    What are you drinking now?

We're a bit too far from civilisation to have much by the way of craft beer here, but I'm enjoying this local Albariza Blanco whilst overlooking the Andalusian countryside.

What I did for beer today

When I finally build the brewery of my dreams, I'm going to get myself one of those hectolitre systems. They look fantastic.

Brew Hazy IPA or Hazy IPA first dor competition?

I would do the hazy first. Contrary to the popular "drink fresh" mantra if you're going all out on hopping (like 15g/L plus dry hopping) then your beer will greatly benefit from decent conditioning time (minimum 3 weeks) and if you're kegging, have a zero oxygen process, and are cold storing...

What came in the mail for you today?

Sane here, albeit only for one brew. Post holiday I'll be returning to my DIPA mission with an amped up version of the DEYA Brewing "Dust My Broom" recipe they recently via Malt Miller. DEYA are my local craft brewery and the reason I started home brewing so similar to the "treehouse style" I'm...

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

I think New England is Conan or a derivative thereof. So very much British in origin.

    Warm Fermented Lager Thread

Doing a rice lager at the moment. NovaLager around 20°C and 8PSI. Worked very well in imperial (7.4%) form last year, expecting the 5% version will also be good.

How many gallons brewed in 2025

6 gallons of Yuzu, Sorachi Ace and Motueka Rice Lager 1834.25 + 6 = 1840.25

What I did for beer today

Just transitioning from mash to boil on a Japanese Rice Lager with Sorachi Ace and Yuzu peel. On target for my 1.045 OG and shooting for 30 IBU with about 1/3 of that coming from the whirlpool. Will get fermented at ambient temp and 8 PSI with NovaLager and should be in a good state for kegging...

American Pale Ale Sub 4% ABV Competition Entry - West Coast "Micro IPA"

My new year's resolution for 2025 was to make an effort to brew some slightly lower ABV beers; I've been homebrewing about five years now averaging about a batch every 5 weeks and I can count the beers <5% that I've brewed on the fingers of one hand. As I've been getting back into weightlifting...

    Don't Do That.

Not ashamed to say I've done similar with a Fermzilla collection jar under 10PSI. It's amazing just how much hop matter can be forced out of a slightly unscrewed gasket sealed threaded joint.

New post a picture of your pint

West Coast Micro IPA. Can you make a ~3.8% Westie that drinks like a beer twice as strong? Not quite but this is DAMN close.

    Sugar

I think beet sugar is a relatively recent thing- IIRC the process for making sugar from sugarbeet is only about 200 years old.

    What are you drinking now?

West Coast Micro IPA. Clarity improving but still not quite there. This has been a great success and will definitely enter my regular circulation. Brewed for a comp which is limited to <4% beers. Aim was to brew a beer that didn't taste sub 4%. 82% MO, 10% Munich, 5% Golden Naked Oats, 3%...

    Best scale for grain

This was my choice for many years before moving up to a 15kg scale as I tend to brew stronger beers with grain bills in the 7-9kg range for 23L fermenter volume. The one I currently use is advertised as a postal scale but is +/-5g accuracy which is plenty for measuring malt.

IPA with Idaho 7 and Amarillo

I would personally lean 1:1 or 3:2 Idaho/Amarillo and also agree with Magnum for main bittering. With my West Coast beers I tend to do small (10-20g) 15m and 5m additions of my aroma hops as I think this adds to depth of flavour. My current grain bill of choice is 87% base malt (I prefer MO or...

What I did for beer today

Packaged up and labelled four bottles of my West Coast Micro IPA late last night along with recipe card and price-to-brew as required by the rules of the competition I'm entering. They're in their box, in an airtight bag, in a cool box full of ice packs in the boot of my car until I get back...
