Tips you would like to have known when you first started brewing?

Many have already stated variations of my thoughts, but here are a few things I wish I knew at the beginning. 1. When brewing a new style, say a porter, research online for recipes and notice the common malts used. Then formulate a basic recipe and just brew a simple version of that style. Save...

I Want a Gronola Bar in a Glass!

Very curious on the the results of 100% Victory. Vienna and 10L Munich both fully convert and I've made a really tasty SMaSH beer with Munich. It is definitely malty, but not sure if it's the level you're looking for?

90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

More of a related question to the shorter mash/boil time. Do you need to make any special adjustments in BeerSmith when crafting the recipe, or does software automatically adjust when you change the mash and boil times?

Hard Seltzer slow fermentation after 6 days...

UPDATE: So the warm water bath seemed to be a success. I got the temp. up to 77. I think the big key is to treat fermention like a yeast starter. For the next 3-4 days I removed air lock so seltzer would gas out, then I shook/swirled the carboy, finally replaced the air lock. I did this in the...

Hard Seltzer slow fermentation after 6 days...

So I'm having similar problem as OP. I made some initial mistakes but attempted corrections haven't done much. 3Gal batch with 4lbs or corn sugar. OG was 1.056 I used Red Star Premier Blanc wine yeast (basically their Champaign yeast). I did NOT add yeast nutrient - OOPS missed that part in my...

    Buying Grain on Amazon

Ideally that is what I was hoping for - a national mail-order homebrew supplier that also sold thru Amazon. Unfortunately it does not seem to be the case. I'll use the gift card money for other supplies or possibly a new golf driver! Thank you everyone for the input.

    Buying Grain on Amazon

Yeah, sometimes gift cards are just a pain, but it is nice having extra income when using Amazon. They used to allow you to buy prepaid VISA cards on Amazon using your gift card balance, but no longer. And I've checked, there is no easy way to convert the balance to be used at other sites...

    Buying Grain on Amazon

Just checking to see if anyone has bought grain on Amazon, specifically 50lb base grain bags or 10lb bags of specialty grains? In searching on Amazon, I'm finding very little choice and the only 50lb 2-row I found was like $75/bag. I normally purchase thru LHBS and once a year my homebrew club...

Value of brulosophy exbeeriments, others experience, myths and beliefs

I did a no boil NEIPA last year. Just a 3 gal. batch to test the process. The beer was good, definitely not great and definitely not as good a my traditional boil NEIPA recipe. Using only DME you get a very light body. The hop flavors and juiciness did come thru.

Having trouble with 1st try at Hard Seltzer

Thanks Marz. I didn't think about the vitamins as affecting flavor. I did consider the fruit juice. Yes, Sparkling Ice brand is sweeter than other seltzers or carbonated beverages. Maybe more back sweeting, using more concentrated fruit juices, and slightly less carbonation would yield a less...

Having trouble with 1st try at Hard Seltzer

I know the difference is probably semantic, but I'm interested in making a hard flavored sparkling water. Not really a hard naturally carbonated mineral water (ala Perrier), but something along the lines of the Sparkling Ice brand of flavored waters. Maybe it is just my tastebuds, but I can't...

Trendy, hip, cutesy, beer name rant

As a professional marketer and homebrewer, I find that half the fun of brewing is naming my beers and designing the label. Although since I started kegging, I've been designing less labels. A few of my favorites: Leprechaun Spit (Irish Red Ale), Reindeer Nutz (Hazelnut Porter), Elf Juice...

    SMaSH or not?

The 30min addition is going to give you your bitterness. If you're shooting for a pale ale or IPA level of hoppiness, then I'd do a 5min, flame-out, and dry hop. Ounces is based on how much hop aroma and flavor you're looking for.

    SMaSH or not?

I usually brew a SMaSH beer every spring - great drinking for late spring/early summer. My preference is a base grain with a little more flavor than just 2-row. I usually go with Maris Otter or my personal favorite Munich. I need to try a Vienna SMaSH sometime soon. Citra and Cascade are my...

Whats the Weirdest Flavor (or Ingredient) you have brewed with

One of my early homebrews was a honeydew ale. Can't remember how much honeydew I put it, but I froze, then thawed it, then put in secondary. Was NOT a good beer. I wanted something that tasted like summer ... NOPE!

    Brown IPA???

I agree with Dgallo. Call it a hoppy brown or even a hoppy red. You get a nice malt balance with the hop bitterness. If you the the hazy or New England route, it won't be pretty but still taste damn good!

    What to Upgrade First?

I'd go next with immersion chiller - buy parts and make one or just buy one. 1/2" copper is the way to go! Next I'd upgrade to larger carboys. I like the 6.5gal Big Mouth Bubbler with spigot. Kegging would be next, but you need to consider CO2 tank, corny kegs and a fridge/chest freezer you can...

Big Mouth Bubbler - Lid Fix

I tried the gasket flipping trick this weekend and it worked like a charm. I have an aggressive fermentation going right now and the lid has stayed in place.

Big Mouth Bubbler Universal Lid solution

I tried the gasket flipping for the first time while fermenting this weekend. Worked like a charm. I had an aggressive fermentation and the lid stayed in place.
