    Where to buy coolers?

I'm having a hard time finding a Rubbermaid 10 gallon round cooler. I see them online - but shipping puts the price up too high. Can anyone suggest what stores might have these? Ian

    RIMS Heating Tube

Do you get much heat loss with the copper? Or do you have it insulated in some way?

    RIMS Heating Tube

Can anyone who's actually built or used a RIMS help me with some advice. I was going to go with the a short immersion heating element - with the 1" threaded fitting. 1.45kw at 120V. I was looking at what other RIMS builders have inserted their heating elements into, and most use some sort of...

    When is a beer born?

From a philosophical point of view, when is a beer actually born? I've been dating mine from the date that I pitch my yeast - but is that correct? It's certainly not beer at that time - it's just a sugary mass with yeast in it. Is it from the time that I keg it?, or the time that I pull my...

    Hop Storage

I've bought a couple pounds of hops. They are vacuum sealed right now. Any one got any thoughts on if it's worth vacuum re-sealing them once opened. I don't have a vacuum sealer - but can get get one - but is it cost effective? Does vacuum sealing reduce degradation significantly enough justify...

Idiot of the year award - Frozen keg

The beer should be fine (don't know about the keg thougb - let us know). I made an Icebock last year that was done be placing the finished lagered beer (a dark lager) in a tuppeware tub in my lagering freezer and taking it down to 30F (-1c). As the water started to freeze, I lifted off the top...

    Oops! - Any Suggestions?

I racked too early. I miss-read the hydrometer, thinking I was at 1.017 about what I expected from my starting gravity of 1.072 - and the fermentation had really slowed so I was happy. So I racked into the secondary, and noticed I was getting a bubble once a minute - ready to leave it for...

    Carbonation in wooden barrels?

I have a 5 gallon charred oak barrel (cost over $200 though) that works for cask conditioned. You don't need an engine unless you are trying to draw the bear somewhere. If you have the barrel on the stand, then leave it in the barrel for the secondary fermentation, then pour off the bear clean...

    cleaning OUTSIDE of cornies

I just filled my bath tub with a tub of PBW (Powdered Brewers Wash (and hot water of course) and sank each corny keg in it for a half hour. The labels just floated off - including the plastic ones - and was spotless inside and out. I ran 4 kegs through this, and hosed them all down outside...

    Old Grain

I have a recipe that was milled 3 months ago. Can I still brew OK with it, or does something happen to the grain if it's not used right away? Ian

    Timing of the Starter

I seem to have repeated difficulty of timing my brew to coincide with when my starter is kreusening. Does anyone make their brew at the same time as the starter, and leave the finished wort sealed up and waiting for the starter to be ready? I was thinking of doing it that way - but as the...

    Question about using a starter

    I regularly brew a 1.078 IPA in a 6.5 gallon carboy. I usually brew 5.5 gallons including a 1/2 gallon starter - and don't need a blow-off tube. Ian

    Hop Bags

I did a batch his weekend using hop pellets. Transferring the wort to the carboy was a real chore because the pellets just formed a sludge which had to be filtered out - and it was slow. I had been advised to stay away from hop bags in the past because they interfere with hop utilization. Is...

Corny Keg Overhaul..... what to do???

Well a 22mm wrench may just fit a 7/8 but I'd be surprised at a US manufacturer using metric. All mine are manufactured by Cornelius and are ball lock and require a 7/8 wrench. What make are using 11/16? :drunk: .
