    Hops still growing

I cut mine off above the dirt. You got some from the USDA program?

    Hops still growing

Last year, I had two hop plants that continued to grow over winter and even set cones in January. They died back on their own sometime in Feb. One decided to stay dormant over summer and start up again in October, and the other started up again with the rest. I guess you should cut back soon?

Organic way to keep bugs off Hops!

If you have access to worm tea (not store bought stuff), you can dilute it (minimum 6:1) and spray directly on the leaves. Not only is it a great fertilizer, but the problematic insects like aphids and whiteflies can't stand the worm tea. At least for me, they've cleared up my white fly, mites...

    Johnny hopseed

The power companies may clear them off the poles themselves, but probably not the support wires. I remember those things always having something growing on them when I lived in OH and upstate NY. You'd promote genetic diversity, but with a proliferation of wild hops, you'd might help spread...

    Bulk buy in LA Cali.

Morebeer in Riverside sells sacks of 2-row for $32.25, but since I live in West LA, it's kind of a hike. Everytime I happen to drive by there, I do stop by and grab a bag of malt though.

    Thyme garden- any good?

I've ordered from them last year, and I didn't have any issues. They won't send the rhizomes until they are pulled from the ground, which would be starting around the beginning of March.

    January Hop Harvest - SoCal

GVH_Dan, not trying to taunt you and other cold-weather folks. (I lived in upstate NY for several years, and I'm quite familiar with cold.) Just trying to figure out if the hop-cone formation in January - even in SoCal - is just uncommon or just a freak occurrence. Temps are not warm, but...

    January Hop Harvest - SoCal

Is it unusual to get hop cones in the middle of January? (When you're in the Northern Hemisphere) I have a Zeus hop that didn't take the hint about going dormant for the season AND and a Tettnang hop. The Zeus has full cones and the Tettnang has them sprouting. Here's a pic of the Zeus's...

    30 gallon plastic fermenter

It's an approximately 30 gallon plastic fermenter that measures 29" H x 17.5" ID (inside diameter). Has a lid with drilled hole for airlock and a threaded bottom port. I haven't used it, but it is not new. I got it with some other stuff, and I thought I would use it for a giant brew... but I...

    using dried cherries

Looking for an update... how did the brew with the dried cherries come out? I was curious if the flavor improved and how it developed, since I was looking to add some dried cherries to an upcoming batch. Was 1 lb. enough or too much?

    Jaggery in an IIPA

I've made a medium belgian beer with jaggery/gur that I got from an Indian market, and the taste was overwhelming to me - it was the only thing that I could taste in the beer. Only half a pound in a 5 gallon batch. It might have been the freshness of the jaggery, but I won't be using it in any...

    F'ing fruit flies

I've been having a fruit fly issue too recently. Turns out that one of my 1L flip-tops had leaked from being placed on its side in one of my cabinets. One hell of a moldy, stinking mess than wasn't very pleasant to clean up. And the source of the hordes of flies... [On a more mysterious note...

    Earwig infestation

So I have an earwig infestation on my hops... anyone had any experience with getting rid of them other than with insecticides? I rather not have not have insecticides in, on, around my hops, but I don't want dead hops either. But they've pretty much have stopped growing anyway at this point...

Is it posible to have no esters from WLP300?

It's a great book, and I can't wait to try some of the things in there suggested in there this summer when I make hefe's and wits.

Is it posible to have no esters from WLP300?

Read "Brewing with Wheat" pages 107-110. • Yeast Selection and Cropping • Fermentation Temperatures • Pitching Rates • Fermenter Geometry • Fermenter Configuration And it is about Ester and Phenol production (i.e. banana and clove character). But to summarize...

Is it posible to have no esters from WLP300?

It might have been too low of a fermentation temperature to produce esters. According to White Labs, optimum temp is 68-72 for this yeast.
