Paper filter for use with refractometer

Regular paper coffee filters. Take a couple oz sample and let it filter through, takes a minute or two. Try to get the temp the same, I'll pour some of the sample onto the refractometer, remove it and then add the actual sample to help with temp. I'm using a digital refractometer..

Paper filter for use with refractometer

Refractometers will not give correct measurements post fermentation. A calculator can give an estimate, but is dependent on a beer specific constant.

    Kegging help and tips

Yes you "should" lube all of the o-rings. I've never seen the posts wear out. The o rings are very cheap to replace. In your picture do you have two o-rings per post? I've never seen that configuration.

    Kegging help and tips

The used keg lids are notorious for leaking at no/very low pressure. Make sure that you use keg lube on that O-ring to help

    The Theoretical Minimum (of Beer)

I've made a 1/8L starter as the first step in reviving some dregs. No I didn't carb and drink it........ but if I had a small enough bottle I could have. 😂

    Kegging help and tips

I purchased my first two corny kegs as refurbished then decided that it was more important to me to have kegs that were all the same. Same shape so I don't have to worry about fitting in my keezer. Same diptubes/posts/lids/poppet/ect. so parts are interchangeable and predictable. I also decided...

    Kegging help and tips

And professional breweries use Sanke kegs. If I was starting out fresh, and knew what I know now, I would be using Sanke as well.

Seat keg lid with o2 for wort transport

    . delete. Misread above post

    Kegging help and tips

I guess I'm just lucky. I've lost beer and CO2 to leaks between the keg posts and the quick disconnects (from bad o-rings, changing orings every year and no more leaks), from not tightening the post all the way (user error) and around barbs. I do normally spray a keg with StarSan after...

    Kegging help and tips

What would be the failure mode of a poppet on a pressurized keg? I've occasional seen them not seat correctly when they are first installed but I do not see how an installed post/poppet could fail. I have a conditioning fridge. No taps at all (other than a sampling tap) for kegs that are...

    Kegging help and tips

Using a carbonation chart Go to the row with the temperature that the beer is stored at. Go over to the right to the volume of CO2 that you want the beer carbed at. The column that you are in is the pressure that you want to carb* at. If you serve at the same temperature as you carbonated...

    Kegging help and tips

I agree with this. I put my kegs on gas at the pressure/temp combination for the carbonation level I want in my conditioning fridge. I have (4) CO2 lines in the conditioning fridge. Occasionally once a keg is fully carbed I am not 'ready' for it in the bar, it will then sit in the fridge with...

    Kegging help and tips

Yes you can and 'should' use it for both CO2 and beer. CO2 line length doesn't matter. 6-7' should be good for almost every carbonation level, I have the same length on all (10) taps. You don't need a check valve directly on the keg. The manifold will prevent backflow into the regulator but...
  15. jddevinn

    Kegging help and tips

The manifold you have pictures does have check valves integral to the quarter turn ball valves. I haven't seen the remote mount primary regulator before (or I just haven't been paying attention.) I wouldn't place the tank in the freezer unless you need to. I did not drill a hole, but a single...

Starsan foam blanket to prevent oxidation

The "foam" is a little bit StarSan and a lot of CO2. The keg is full of air (part we care most is O2). By the time that the foam "purges" the keg it will be a little bit StarSan and a lot O2. The CO2 in the foam will immediately start to mix with the air as soon as it enters the keg. You can...

    Why I do secondary fermentation

Unless you get enough kegs 😂 With 10 taps I've had kegs of 'specialty' beer on tap for 10+ months. Before I started being "anal" about O2 most would deteriorate after ~2-4 months depending on style. My first NEIPA was bad a month after tapping the first keg. I've just changed all my "red...

SG 1.078 down to FG 1.000? Infection or super-yeast? (Wyeast 3787)

Can't use a refractometer directly for FG. You can use a calculator but need the wort factor that is specific to the beer.

Ok I pressure fermented.... now what?

I've never bottled before. But I think you should be safe to assume (if you haven't cold crashed or disturbed) that the beer is CO2 saturated at the fermentation temperature and pressure. Look the CO2 volume up on a carbonation chart. This is now the carbonation of the "flat beer" use the...
