I’m tired of making grassy gross IPA’s.

I'm curious if you did one extract batch with the flame out hops and no water chemistry if you'll still have that problem. When you use extract, there is no need for water chemistry because the maltster did the water chemistry already.

I don't remember, do you do all grain? If you went the extract route, water chemistry shouldn't be an issue.

I doubt the too hot flame out is the issue. I've always thrown the hops in right after turning the gas off... While the worth was in the 200sF and I never got this too grassy flavor.

Mash temp dropping by like 6F

I just took another gravity reading and it is sitting at around 1.011 - 1.012. Very far from 1.016. Is it for sure from low mash temp now? Luckily this is an IPA. Do you think I'll notice that it will lack body or maltiness as compared to 1.016?

Anyone still milling grain with a hand crank???

I use a Corona Mill so I let it fly with my cordless drill.

Measuring OG... How close is good enough?

The OG I'm referring to is the desired target OG. For example, If I was shooting for 1.060 and I hit 1.056. Is it good enough? Or would you say that target was missed?

Measuring OG... How close is good enough?

How close +/-, in points, to the OG would you say is close enough? Let's say the calculated OG is 1.060, what's an acceptable measured range would you say is close enough?

I try to crush as fine as I can with my Corona Mill. I didn't realize it can take as little as 5 mins to convert.

Mash temp dropping by like 6F

I took a final gravity reading and I'm currently at 1.014. I was shooting for 1.016. Since it's only been fermenting for a week, I'm sure gravity will go down a bit more. For sure this lower than expected gravity is due to lower mash temp.

I didn't forget to preheat the may tun, I don't think I preheated enough. It was ambient temperature was colder than usual, so I didn't adjust for it correctly. I'll be more careful next time.

You should work on your water chemistry for all your beers going forward.

I’m tired of making grassy gross IPA’s.

I use RO water, Brunwater, and just bought a .01g precision scale. I use gypsum, calcium chloride, lactic acid, and baking soda for my water additions. I'm pretty sure this is your problem.

You mentioned purified drinking water but you didn't mention brewing salts. Did you add any?

Anyone still milling grain with a hand crank???

I did this for a few of batches using a corona mill... until I finally took the mill with me to Home Depot and found a bolt that fits into where the hand crank fits into. I just did a test run using a drill and I am loving all-grain brewing again! :D Please, for the love of the Homebrew Gods...

Looking for a cheap .1g resolution weight scale

I got the scale in the mail. Played around with it using table salt and I am happy with it. Now I can't wait until I brew the next batch!

Looking for a cheap .1g resolution weight scale

I can't wait to play with it tomorrow. This is the one I got: American Weigh Scales 100G X 0.01G Digital Scale, With Seaside 100 G Stainless Steel Calibration Weight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XWEAGRS/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Looking for a cheap .1g resolution weight scale

That SKYROKU scale looks exactly like the same AWS one I ordered. Is the SKYROKU a knock off of the AWS? Or does the manufacturer of that scale model make them for different companies?

Huge yeast starter or yeast washing?

This guy is still chugging along but activity is significantly decreased. I'll let it sit for another 10 days before taking the first reading. Thanks for all the feedback!

Looking for a cheap .1g resolution weight scale

Yeah, I ended up getting the AWS with the 100g calibration weight and I should be getting it on Friday. I'll play with it using grains of table salt to see how sensitive it reacts. I doubt I'll ever measure less than one gram, but if I do, I'll just add some other adjunct weight to get the...
