How much do you carbonate your Weizen?

Thanks for the input. I bottled at 1.009 which was 81% attenuation, so I think that was fully attenuated with WLP300 - a good point though. Thanks for the photo, it certainly looks pretty perfect. From my calcs 7oz is about 3.4 vols of CO2, which is still more than my recent effort at only 3...

How much do you carbonate your Weizen?

Howdy, I've pretty much cracked my Weizen as far as flavour goes, but am finding it hard to get the carbonation level right when bottling. My andriod app says the correct level is between 3.6 - 4.5 volumes of CO2, but when I tried 4.0 vols the result was impossible to open without spilling...

How to bottle lager & reseed with yeast?

Sorry to hear that Don, this method worked pretty well for me - although I did hydrate the yeast seperately and then combine with the priming sugar when I as ready to bottle. I think you're right about the hydrate. To answer the other question, yes - those people love to find fault :(

    My first lager

The longer and colder the period of lagering, the less yeast will be left in suspension. With a very effective bottling practice there could be next to none in the bottles, hence the need to reseed with extra yeast PLUS the priming sugar. With reseed it could be fully carbonated withing 2 wks...

Whatever happened to the cheap Chinese conicals?

Depends how much you mean by cheap? I found a 300L (sorry metric) single skin for about $1000. Not much in China more exciting than that.

Best Way to Cool with CF Chiller

I have to recirculate for 5 mins to get down to pitching temp, can yours reach that temp in one pass? How big is the thing! If one pass is enough, why do more?

    My first lager

Kingkeg is a big barrel, right? Never used one myself but if it is a dunno how you would keep enough pressure for a good lager - corny would be better. I always bottle. The lager I bottled 10 days ago was reseeded with 3gms of dry nottingham yeast, and was kept in the warm since. I opened one...

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Hey, thanks again - lots of really useful stuff to consider before I send off my dollars

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Yeah that would help. There is something at the top which isn't labelled on the drawing - I guess thats a release valve? I suppose you mean for adding dry hops? Sorry if this is a dumb question... but could I just add the dry hops before filling the thing - thru the hatch at the front before I...

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Just a quick update - the plant replied saying that the FV does have a manway.... they just didn't draw it! hmmmm Not sure what to say about that? Anyway I've got another option, if I could indulge you again. This is from a different plant, and is $400 more expensive but seems much better...

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Yeah thanks for the feedback. I have wrote to the plant asking if they can supply the same tank with a manway, lets hope so. They've also quoted me for a conditioning tank to go with it - If I'm planning to rack into that then it sounds like I could get away with the cone as it is?

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Yeah you're right 75 isn't too steep - am I right in thinking the issue with that is that the yeast can cling to the walls higher up than you'd want resulting in poor clarity at the bottom of the FV??

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

My thoughts exactly, worryingly the plant seems to be only about a year old so I've found little online. The plant have declined to give me any contact with happy customers due to confidentiality rules. Thanks wailingguitar, I've never seen probrewer before - just what I need!

    Comment on an FV? (conical)

Hey, I've got a drawing of an FV that I'm thinking of getting from China and was hoping that you guys could see if there is anything wrong with it that I might have missed? It's around 80 gallons has a cooling jacket and insulation and will cost $1500, what do you think? many thanks in advance

    My first lager

Daz stick it in the garage and forget about it. In Northants it was -7C the other night and my Munich Dunkel was fine. I wouldn't go near it for a month, 2 if you can wait that long? The longer you can lager for the clearer it will look, and cleaner it will taste.

How to bottle lager & reseed with yeast?

Awesome, thanks guys. R.e. Corn sugar - I've always wanted to use it to see if I could gain any improvement but we just dont use it in the UK? Some folks do use brown sugar - Demerera, etc and claim it is faster carbonating. As Yooper says though, cane is always fine in my IPA's, Dubbels, etc -...

How to bottle lager & reseed with yeast?

Hi Bob, Its pretty heavy, 7.7% - I know thats not really to style, but I only get to brew 1 or 2 per year so I make it to last a while. I always leave the bottles for a minimum of 4-6 wks before I try to drink them, a bit longer for stuff this strong - although last years was nearer 5-6% I...

How to bottle lager & reseed with yeast?

Howdy, I've been lagering a Munich Dunkel for 2 months and fancy bottling this weekend. The one I did last winter was great, but as flat as a witches t*t. So I fancy reseeding this one as I prime it, but have never done so before. The original yeast was white labs, which has all gone now, so...

Any propane users able to help please?

Thanks Kevin, Thats a sweet looking setup - love that electric ignition, wish I'd thought about one rather than lying on the floor with a long lighter to get mine going. Looking at your exhaust also makes me realise I've cut that in far too low aswell. Lucky I'm getting better at cutting holes...
