First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

Yeah, I wanted to get the yeast at the same temperature as the wort. I messed up and didn't do it. So, my 2-stage yeast starter seems to have worked after about 24 hours. This morning, I have lots of activity!

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

I decided to go with WLP830 for the Helles beer and Wyeast 2124 for the German Pilsner. I gave it 2 days on the stir plate, 2 days cold crashed, and pitched yeast about 1.5 days later. Wort was 51F and yeast was at room temperature, 72F. It's been 12 hrs and at appears not much action yet. Do...

    lessons learned after 10 batches

    1. Agree. I just bought one after years of brewing without it and wish I bought one sooner. 2. I find that if I keep the temperature at the low end of the range for the yeast I'm using, I never need a blow-off tube. YMMV. 3. Use software to calculate the amount of malt needed for your efficiency...

    Keezer temp probe placement

I just leave my probe dangling in the air inside the keezer. Never had an issue. Depending on ambient air temperature, it can cycle every hour or two in the summer to never in the winter. I keep it in the garage.

    Tower/faucet recommendations

I've had my kegerator for years (on my second one) using picnic taps to dispense my homebrew. I decided to use picnic taps since I don't drink beer everyday and I felt that this way everything is kept cold and clean including the taps and the lines. However, I've had two occasions now where...

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

Great. I'll do 144F for 45 min, 154F for 25 min, and 162F for 20 min. I've never mashed at 162F before, but I've never had issues with foam and head retention with ales. Typically, I never mash above 154F or 156F. Agreed. If I decide to do another lager, I'll probably invest in a 5L flask. I'm...

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

What mash temps would you recommend? I have a HERMS setup, so I can mash at any temp and do many steps. So, 144F for 20 min and 150F for 40 min? I started my starters last night and they are chugging away at room temp (~72F). This is a 1.5L, 1.040 wort step and I refrigerated another 1.5L...

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

I went to Brewer's Friend to use the yeast calculator. I put in my wort gravity of 1.048 and 5.5 gallon batch size and used a target pitch rate of Pro Brewer 1.75 (is that right?) with 1 liquid yeast pack dated in April. It shows I need 434 billion cells. According to the calculator, I can do...

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

I have two 2L flasks. But, I'm brewing two beers. So, I may need another option.

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

I do keg. So, I'll go for a couple of weeks until fermentation is done and rack to keg directly.

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

So, I do a 2L starter two days before brewday. Let it settle, decant and use the slurry into another 2L starter on the day before brewday and pitch the entire starter on brewday? Correct? Also, the starter on a stirplate at room temperature? I'll remove the CaraPils.

First Lager Recipe--Critiques Wanted on Recipe and Techniques

Having vast experience (decades) with brewing all-grain ales, I've finally decided to do a lager for the first time. In fact, I want to brew 2 lagers on the same day since it saves me time. So, I decided upon a Munich Helles and German Pilsner. Here's the recipes. Munich Helles 10 lbs German...

    I screwed up again. ARGH!

I screwed up again! I brewed an American Wheat Ale and a Blonde Ale last weekend and was intending on keeping the temperature at 60F for the first week to get a very clean profile. Unfortunately, I set my temperature to 20C which I thought to myself, at the time, that is 60F. Of course, 20C is...

Burlington and Stowe VT brewery recommendations

Wow! Farm Homestead looks awesome. I want the Saison. It's my favorite style. I'm not sure it will be open when I'm in Stowe. Monday thru Wednesday morning.

I'll definitely checkout Alchemist Brewery since they are in Stowe. Do they sell cans there?

Burlington and Stowe VT brewery recommendations

I've had Heady Topper in cans and thought it was very good (not great), but I'll have to try it on draft and see if it's even better. It gets a lot of hype and praise. Not sure if its justified in my mind. Magic Hat is at the bottom of the list. Not very good in my opinion. I'll have to track...

Taking the Refractometer Plunge--Help Me Select One

I went with the Ade Advanced Optics refractometer and used it for the first time today. I calibrated it to read 0 with water. I measured my wort with both the refractometer and my hydrometer. I got Brix 15.0 and 1.058 with my hydrometer. This is a little off. I used Beersmith to do the...
