Upright Keezer, 8 taps, 11 kegs

I needed extra tap space over Thanksgiving so I converted my upright freezer that I've been using for fermentation, into a dual purpose fermenter/keezer using John W.'s excellent inspiration. I needed at least four more taps for beer, so that's what I added. I also added a wine tap, and...

What do advanced homebrewers ferment 10 gallon batches in?

I use a 14 gallon MoreBeer conical for my 10 gallon batches.

    Buying a used corny

Did you buy it? How did it look?

    Foam. Foam. Foam.

Well, I recently converted an upright freezer that was being used solely as a fermentation chamber to dual use by adding through the door taps, and a CO2 distributor. With the Holidays coming I have some extra brews I'd like to serve, as well as serve some wine on tap, so I have five new taps...

    Apricot: Extract vs Fruit

I've made an apricot ale twice now, both times using dried apricots and extract, but in varying proportions. I've tasted it after the dried apricot secondary fermentation before adding the extract, and there is a subtle apricot flavor. The extract adds a different dimension to the overall...

    Ipa fermentation

I'd let it sit in your primary for a few more days, or even a week or two. Sitting in your primary for three or four weeks won't hurt the beer. Then transfer to you keg, taste and either drink it or let it sit another couple weeks. My high hops IPAs (I have one on tap with 10 oz during the...

3 beers a day is healthy according to this study!!

Wow - a health regimen I can live with!!

    Low original gravity

It's difficult to say waht you did wrong without knowing what you did. Did you use all the extract in the kit, and rinse the LME containers into your pot. Did you use the right amount of water, or did you add some extra? Maybe you misread your hydrometer? The taste probably won't be off by...

    specific gravity

My thoughts are no, it won't change the specific gravity. But I'm sure there's a chemist lurking out there with the exact answer.

Need advice on all grain set up

My advice is go bigger than you thought you'd need. I planned on 5 gallon batches, but bought my equipment to hangle 10 gallon "just in case". I've made quite a few 10 gallon batches, especially of my favorite beers. And 15 gallon keggles will be fine for 5 gallon batches.

How much base malt do you consome in a year?

I'd guess about 350#. I currently have 165# 2-row, about 70# pilsner, and 20# of maris otter on hand. I'll brew through that by the end of January.

advice needed for this stir plate

I think your stir plate looks great - nice cigar box! I've found that with mine, when I have yeast in suspension the liquid is thicker and the vortex doesn't reach the bottom as readily. As long as the stir bar isn't thrown off the magnet because it's spinning too fast, you should be OK. And...

    Buying a used corny

Two things - first, that it seals, and then that all the parts are there. Ask the seller to put it under pressure. You could take a small spray bottle with a mixture of dish detergent and water and spray the ring where the lid meets the keg, as well as the posts and pressure relief valve to...

    Repitched twice, and STILL stuck.

I had my first stuck fermentation with the batch in my fermenter now. The guy at my LHBS suggested yeast nutrient. I was skeptical, but bought some and added it. The next day, the bubbling in the airlock began again. You might give that a try, it worked for me.

    Fan in keezer wiring question

I think you should combine options 1 and 3. You'll need to convert from 110V AC to 12V DC for the computer fan, so you'll need the cell charger as noted in option 1. Next, I'd suggest plugging the charger into the same outlet as the keezer - you'll obviously need an adapter, from one outlet to...

    Liquid yeast for a DIPA

A stir plate provides quite a bit of advantage, and you can successfully create a starter by swirling. But you need to be diligent in your swirling. My stir plate is great - it even works when I'm sleeping. The stir plate keeps the yeast in suspension longer, which uses the wort more...

    Liquid yeast for a DIPA

My experience is that 1.040 is the sweet spot. You could make a larger volume of starter @ 1.040 in a larger container to grow more ueast, but if you step up the gravity you'll end up blowing your krausen all over the place and it will be a mess. And yes, splitting is a good option.

curious like a cat, fermentation question

My guess it that you had a leak somewhere. It doesn't take much of one for the CO2 to go somewhere else besides through the airlock.
