Post your "whoops" moments- messes, etc

Only 7 brew under my belt, but my first big mistake was on my last batch (my first attempt at Kölsch): forgot to remove the Starsan from my fermenter before pouring in the wort... So, about 1/2 gallon of diluted Star San in my beer... It fermented very well (that was last Thursday), and it's too...

Poured wort over 1 gallon of Star San solution...

I took a sample yesterday after fermentation (now at a nice 1.010). It tasted fine, though it did some to have something like a light "twang", not that different from a soda. I started the cold conditioning, so we'll see how it is in a few weeks.

Poured wort over 1 gallon of Star San solution...

If I calculated properly, it's about 0.15 oz of pure Starsan (about half a teaspoon), in almost 4.5 gallon of liquid. In any case, the fermentation started nicely after about 14 hours. It's my first attempt at a Köslch, fermenting at a steady 58F. I have a Brewometer, and it already went down...

Poured wort over 1 gallon of Star San solution...

It was about 3/4 gallon (approx) of properly diluted starsan, in a 4 gallon batch. That seems like a whole lot of Starsan to me, but I guess I'll see! I am mainly concerned about toxicity; so far, it seems that when properly diluted, you could drink the thing directly with no bad effect, but...

Poured wort over 1 gallon of Star San solution...

The title says it all: I made my first major brewing mistake this PM. I forgot to dump the Starsan in my fermentor (about 1/2 to 3/4 gallon, I guess) before pouring my wort. Since I do Maxi-BIAB, I was about to add water anyway, so I just added less than I was supposed to. I will go ahead...

    Budweiser is changing it's name

This wins the thread, hands down! :mug:

    Budweiser is changing it's name

Ok, I stand corrected on "America" vs "Americas". In French, l'Amérique (singular) also refers to the whole American continent, comprised of both North and South America.

    Budweiser is changing it's name

I don't dispute that this has been the usage, and that anybody using the word "America" right now means "the United states of America". The fact that it became the norm is still is indicative of a culture that considers itself the center of the (free and enlightened) world.

    Budweiser is changing it's name

I actually did it on purpose. We're so used to i that we can't see how to call them differently. I just find it annoying that some inhabitants of the United States of America are using the word America to designate their country. Living in Canada, I, too, live in America. Just not in the...

    Budweiser is changing it's name

Quick question: do Americans realize that "America" is not the name of their country, but of the continent that their country happens to be on? And that their are other countries on the continent called "America"?

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

FWIW, the first beer I brewed with the help of the BrewOmeter turned out the be my best so far (at least, for the moment, one week after bottling). It was my 6th batch. Maybe it's the recipe itself, maybe the fact that I had temperature control for the first time, or maybe having a better...

    Grainfather!!

I have a question for those using the Grainfather inside. I'm in Canada and I don't have a garage, so I would most likely have to use it inside (in the kitchen) from October to May, roughly. How do you handle the humidity during boil, since the unit is not directly beneath the hood?

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

FWIW, my temp readings were ok while cold crashing (they may have been slightly different from the beer itself until equilibrium was reached, but nothing too weird). It's the gravity reading that became wrong: it had been sitting between 1.014 and 1.016 (which was fine, as the hydrometer at...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Interesting. Could the difference in temp between the interior of the device, the air in the headspace and the beer somehow affect the way the device is floating, hence affecting the "tilt" and therefore the gravity calculation? That would explain why I was getting some very weird gravity...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Not sure where that comes from, as their site says: Q. How accurate is the Brewometer? A. The specific gravity is accurate +/- 0.002.The thermometer is accurate +/- 2 degrees F (+/- 1 degree C).

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

I had the exact same problem with mine when I tested in water. Simply swirling the fermenter corrected the situation. The same happened when I dry hopped: the device got "stuck" in the thick green layer, and the readings were off. Swirling did the job.

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

A replacement has been sent to me. Will take some time to get here, but I should have it available for my next brew day. The one I will send back to them was clearly affected by temperature changes (they seem to think that it's not possible, but the numbers don't lie). It was sitting pretty...

Cold Crashing. is it worth the risk with hoppy beers?

Ok, here is my situation: I am brewing an IPA (brewed on April 19th). Fermentation done since almost a week, beer still sitting in the primary ( I don't do secondary). First time I have temp control: sat around 65-66 until towards the end of fermentation, and ramped up to around 70. I dry...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

Update: I shared my spreadsheet with the developers, because I thought that the fluctuations were a bit unusual: (from 1.011 to 1.018 is quite significant). I still had it today going down to 1.012, and up to 1.017). The developers looked at the data and think it shouldn't fluctuate that...

Brewometer kickstarter thoughts - digital bluetooth hydrometer

I suspect something similar: mine had been hovering between 1.011 and 1.014 for about 48 hours. When I hiked up the temp (about 2 F), the gravity also went up, with most readings between 1.015 and 1.018. It now seems to have stabilized between 1.014 and 1.016. It does seem like temperature...
