    Ballentine IPA

Bringing this back from the dead only b/c BYO has an article with a couple of clone recipes in the new (May/June 2010) issue and I have some Bullion hops on hand and would like to give the IPA a try. BYO is calling for 6-row. I might use one of the varieties of 2-row I have on hand instead of...

I knew Aeration Equipment is a Waste of $...

Real world results will tell me everything I need to know. I used to rock the carboy, then got sick & tired of doing it - plus it's tricky with Better Bottles. I got a plastic whip like this, chuck it in a drill, have a good ol' time whippin' it up and have seen much shorter lag times to...

    Beer Can Collection

Looks a lot like what is left of my old can collection from my high school days. I still have in my brewery. You are correct about Meister Brau. It was a Chicago brewery bought in the late 1960s by Miller. When they bought MB, they got the Lite recipe and rights to the name and the rest, as...

    Pabst won the blue ribbon

This post wins my blue ribbon! Here, here! The "new" Schlitz is not worth the price, either; save your coins.

Fans of Mac & Jack's forgive me.

I have to strongly disagree there. Besides, Alaskan Amber isn't really an Amber, it's an Alt. So it may just be that you don't care for Alts. I had it for the first time last June when I was in AK and loved it. Trying to work up a clone based on several different ones posted on the Interwebz.

    Keg cleaning how often?

I'm like Bobby on this. I disassemble every 4th beer or so or if a beer sat in this keg for a long period of time. I toss all the o-rings, replace & lube them at this time, too, regardless of whether they look good or not.

    Your Millennial score is

Age 51 / score 10. My wife has a Sh!tfacebook page, I don't see the appeal. I have always thought video games are boring and lower your IQ, but that comes from my first job at the age of 16 being at an Aladdin's Castle video arcade and seeing all the mouthbreathers every day I worked there. I...

Sound off: Commercial beer you're digging

My wife & I were in Madison last weekend and I picked up a 6-er of Fat Squirrel Nut Brown Ale on the way home. Hadn't had it in ~3 years. I had one last night and forgot how good it was. (She & I also put away a lot of Texas Speed Bump IPA at The Great Dane.:D)

Airlock Activity as a Gauge of Fermentation

And this worthless post?... I've been brewing for thirteen years and always used the airlock to judge. As was stated: That's it - end of story. Sure I use a hydrometer, but I don't bother with it until after I've counted bubbles every 60 secs. or longer. I'm not about to waste time...

    What are your house brews?

I try and brew Kelly's Honey Blonde Ale, Deep Chocolate Stout, Silky Brown Ale and Irish Wake Stout as often as I can, but I like to have something new on tap. The seasonals are yearly staples - Snow Day Bock in March, Dortmunder Pretzel Munchin' Beer in July and WeddingFest in September.

    Helloooo HBT from Lockport, IL

Welcome. Also, check out Zepole on the I-55 service road in B'brook. They carry big aluminum pots - that's where I got mine. You may have to ask at the desk, they keep them in the back, not usually on display.

Proposed Style Guidelines. Cascadian Dark Ale

Hey, Oakshire Brewing has one! My favorite formerly local brewer Matt Van Wyk is there now. Would love to try their version. It really is Vermont's beer. Last night I had the Southern Tier (NY) Iniquity on tap and would love to clone that stuff! Amazingly good.

    3/8"-1/2" copper tubing

No, but now I will! Thanks for the tip! When you think about it, it makes more sense.

    3/8"-1/2" copper tubing

I just picked up a 3/8"X50' roll at Menard's last night for $38+change. I needed to make a new IC. Picked up a couple of compression fittings while I was there to put on the ends. I'll roll it out, reform it and will put it together this weekend. Coppertubingsales.com had been the go-to place...

Proposed Style Guidelines. Cascadian Dark Ale

Yeah. About three years ago I brewed this recipe and screwed up roasting the three lbs. of "roasted 2-row". I ended up with some black grains on the bottom of my roasting pan. I went ahead and brewed with them anyway and the resulting beer was tasty! I thought I had created something!:D Then...

Proposed Style Guidelines. Cascadian Dark Ale

Actually, longer than that. It is pretty well known that the late Greg Noonan brewed what is now Blackwatch IPA, a dark India ale, during his first stint at VBP in the early 1990s. And to call it a dark pale ale is just stupid - like military intelligence or hot water heater. No. It should...

    Bare Tree Brewing Co. Labels

I've always liked your label designs. What do you print them on? I don't have PS, but want to do a one-time label for a special brew I'm handing out to life-long friends to age. Simple design (for a simpleton like me:)) that I want to either print out on our ink jet printer or send to a shop...

Nuh uh, YOUR vacuum sealer sucks!

So, when you open a bag up to use some hops, are you able to vacuum reseal it? Or do you have to put the remaining hops into a new bag and start from scratch? I just ordered four pounds of hops and will be ordering more in a few more weeks. I've always kept my hops in a dedicated chest...

    Dry hopping.

Just rack over them. I always dry hop with whole leaf hops and have never had an infection. Sanitize anything you'll use to get them into your carboy (I use a sanitized funnel). It's been stated that hops have antimicrobial properties and that is true. Think of how IPAs got to be IPAs in the...
