    Temperature Monitor

Oh gosh. That'd be perfect. How the hell do I build a thermowell?

    Temperature Monitor

I am in the process, the painfully slow process due to school, of building a RIMS setup - and I need to figure out a way to monitor wort outflow temperatures from my CFC. I'd love to make this a permanent part of the controller - and to do so I figured I'd integrate a thermocouple with male...

    RIMS - Mashout

Well that is that then. This summer, when I am not occupied with trying to be a good and financially sound college student, I will build one of these dual chamber suckers and see what good it does. If somebody else gets it in mind to do this before me, I won't be annoyed, after all, the...

    RIMS - Mashout

What about using a double RIMS chamber - a split feed, two elements and the thermocouple at the joined outflow. You'd get the heating of two elements, but you'd also have to deal with the power requirements of the two. Could this decrease ramp time and make step-mashing feasible? This is...

    RIMS - Mashout

Could some of this be rectified by placing the PID sensor at the outflow of the MLT rather than the HEX out?

    RIMS Heating Tube

For using the 240VAC 4500W elements on 110v - what sort of amp draw will that element have - is there any way to calculate that? At 240v that element would draw 18.75 amps (W/V=A), which is easy enough to figure out - but does that calculation still apply when you halve the voltage?

    BLING BLING Electric HERMS Conversion

Pol - Thanks for being such a documentarian on this build, it is actually clarifying most of what I have wanted to do and not known exactly how. When you use a voltometer/mm - it is to check for shorts, current where it shouldn't be, and that you have the right amount of current where you...

    Fermenter Airspace

Would a person run into problems with oxidation etc. when fermenting a 3 gallon batch in a 5 or 6 gallon bucket? Is this even an issue?

    Late Extract Additions

Is there a way to configure a recipe for late additions in BeerSmith? I can't seem to find one.

    BCS-460 Beta Test

Any word on when this will be made available to the brewing public?

120v/2000 watt element, how long to heat water??

Mostly because I haven't got a clue here and am feeling around in the dark. I need to make friends with an electrician before I kill myself. So, in short - I could absolutely run a my rims and HLT off the range plug. I think I was definitely misunderstanding the concept of amperage. All...

120v/2000 watt element, how long to heat water??

Yeah I figured. My other option is to unplug my range and use that 240VAC line, but I am pretty sure it is on a 40 or 50 Amp breaker. Would I need to put in another smaller breaker (30 Amp) to run my RIMS?

120v/2000 watt element, how long to heat water??

Supposing you were running a RIMS system off 20 Amp 120vac, obviously when the HLT was heating to strike temp, the other element would be off. But once you got the RIMS going, pump and everything, if the PID controlling the HLT element turned it back to keep the HLT at sparge temps, would the...

    darkness?

Had the same problem, the guys here cleared it up for me a couple days ago, and this is what I learned: Boiling all of you extract together in a partial volume boil causes the extract to caramelize, leaving the wort and subsequent beer darker than it ought to be. The way to correct this is to...

    RIMS Controller design questions

I am at a bit of a loss here - I am trying to design a RIMS controller and I don't have the necessary knowledge of electrical parts/design to figure out what I need. Leave it to the pros at this point would be best but I am going to build this myself and I could use some help figuring out what...

Anyone Made a Homemade Wort Chiller?

I just made one yesterday actually - had alot of fun with the blowtorch - which didn't turn out nearly as neat as the rest on this thread but hopefully it works out. I will be adding some 14 or larger gauge copper wire to get a uniform spacing between tubes, which will also help stiffen up the...

Scuba's Rig Build 2: Judgment Day

You can always tell the quality of a hobby/obsession by whether or not the uninitiated can tell what you are talking about. The obtuse the nomenclature, to more involved and interesting the hobby. In one of your earlier posts on this thread, you refer to a cooler MLT as being not as uniform as...

Scuba's Rig Build 2: Judgment Day

    Portable RIMS

That is more or less exactly what I was thinking - except with a cooler connected with disconnects to make it come apart even smaller. Really when if comes down to it, the total size of the RIMS section of this wouldn't need to be that big - just limited by what a guy can do with the plumbing...

    Late Extract Additions

It's been recommended to me that when brewing with extract, a lighter color can be achieved by withholding some quantity of the ME and putting it in at 30 minutes into the boil, or so. How does this affect the bittering process? Does one have to account for this with quantity and timing with...
