    first time brew recipe

It really depends on how high of a gravity you are going for - which can depend on beer style and personal preference. It also depends on how you decide to proceed with your brewing. If you want to continue doing extract beer with steeped specialty grains, I would suspect that using two 3.3 lb...

Need to reign in my snobbery

My last comment about the rice/corn was ineffective sarcasm. :drunk: I've decided to try it all (at some point), no more snobbery for me! :ban:

    first time brew recipe

I may be wrong because I did it quickly, but I plugged your original recipe into Beer Smith and I got an OG of 1.031, which is basically what you ended up with. I would expect a lowish OG using only 3.3 lbs of extract.

Need to reign in my snobbery

I am by no means a "beer snob" (or even a beer geek) when it comes to what I drink. I have a undeveloped palate, so I enjoy almost every beer I try. All of my home brews taste good to me (except the very first one), although I know someone more advanced could pick out multiple flaws in each...

Brew your own - Social condemnation?

My parents' friends usually look at me funny when they find out I brew my own. In fact, one of them is staying at the 'rents house for a few days for a classical music festival, and she was skeptically curious about my hobby. I reassured her that I (mostly) drink because I love the taste of good...

First time brewer. I could use some tips!

Be sanitary and have fun! My first brew was also all extract, but looking back I kind of wish I would have steeped some specialty grains as well. I also used a weak bleach solution to sanitize bottles, but have since switched to Starsan as the bleach sketched me out. As far as fermentation time...

    Punk Rock and Hardcore

Haha Mike is definitely not in a rush to play the next song. Guttermouth is like that too, but a little less preachy and more sarcastic. both put on good shows. As a side note on punk bands, some dudes from my HS were in a band called dfc, your user name reminded me of that. Cheers!

    Punk Rock and Hardcore

I grew up in southern California in the 90s, so I like a lot of bands from Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords. Strung Out, Lagwagon, Pennywise, NUFAN, nofx, Good Riddance, Pulley, Bad Religion, old AFI, old Rise Against, Osker, some of the Nardcore bands (actually just Ill Repute and Scared...

    My first keezer!

Awesome build. If this is your first keezer I can only imagine your next one... EBay money! The DIY section of HBT is becoming my favorite. I have NO woodworking skills, but watching you guys build beautiful pieces of art (and yes, keezers like this are art) inspires me to no ends. If only...

    Commercial beer = bad, mmmkay?

This. I buy beers from local breweries because I like supporting them as much as I can. I also buy Coors Light a lot (go ahead, flame away) because I'm still young-ish and Friday night drinking games last longer when you play with watered down beer. The day I stop playing beer pong is the day I...

    Beersmith questions..... HELP!!!!

I'm still getting the hang of the program, but I'll add my $0.02 s anyway. The numbers that BeerSmith pumps out are dependent on the equipment profile you have set up. Although it took me a while to figure out (I was only on my second batch when I started using it), I stillwould take the time...

    SMaSH schedule help needed

The only reason I went with 3.5g is because I didn't know if too much head space would cause an issue. If I can do 2.5g in a 5g carboy with no problems, I'd much rather do it that way.

    SMaSH schedule help needed

Hello all, I searched a lot if SMaSH threads, but they ended up being mostly recipe advice. Here's my situation: I've decided to use my first carboy (5 gallons) to do 3.5 gallon SMaSH batches while I use my 6.5 for full recipes. My goal being to learn what the different base grains bring to...

    Fermentation only lasted 2 days.

It is definitely still fermenting. lack of airlock activity is not a good indicator of fermentation. I'd suggest buying a hydrometer and taking a reading after 10 days. Then take another one 2 days later. If the gravity is the same, then its done fermenting. Three days of a constant gravity...

    Friends paying for beer?!

Haha I was just discussing this with a friend the other day. My two roommates help me brew (not financially, they stand in our garage with me while I brew. Sometimes they'll toss in a hop addition). But i've noticed they drink the finished beer at a slightly greater rate than I do. They also...

    auto siphon question

Awesome guys, thanks for all the advice. I'll try attaching the tube to the auto siphon before I drop them in the Starsan. And, good advice about the height above the bottling bucket. I usually have a foot or two gap. The HBT community rocks!

    cold crashing?

I'm also planning on doing it for the first time next weekend. Here's what I found in my experiments so far: I'm in Southern California so my fermentation closet stays fairly cool. With a rubbermaid bucket with only water, the H2o stays at 64*. A single frozen gallon water jug Brough the temp...

    cold crashing?

From what I've come to understand, you don't. Just make sure you have something like cheap vodka in your carb lock, so that if it gets sucked in to your beer it won't cause problems (like bleach would). You could probably also use Starsan since your beer will be coming into contact with it...

    auto siphon question

So I did a couple searches on this topic, but i'm on my phone and the search function doesn't seem to be as accurate as the computer version. So my apologies if an answer is easily accessible already. Two batches ago, when racking to bottles, I used my auto siphon and tubing straight out of...

    My 8-foot bar build

Awesome. I'm super jealous of you guys who can build stuff like this. These kind of posts make me want to cut wood.
