    n00b Homebrewer from So*Cal

Hey Tyler, welcome to HBT! I was actually just at Stone today (July 8). I had lunch and took the tour. Had dinner at the Bistro last night. Great place you guys have down there, I'll definitely be going back.

    First brewery tour this weekend

So I decided to take SWMBO down to the San Diego area, as she has always wanted to see the Wild Animal Park. It had nothing to do with Stone being down the street in Escondido, I swear. But, since we are here, we are going to have dinner at the bistro and a tour of the brewery. I know the...

    BIAB "Experiment" Gone Wrong

On the day I thought the same thing. But I can't narrow it down to anything else. Oh well, it will still be beer :)

    BIAB "Experiment" Gone Wrong

So I brewed a somewhat large IIPA on Sunday (well, the largest beer I've brewed so far), and my mash efficiency was in the toilet. I figured I would document my experience here in case it can help anyone in the future. Up until now, I have been doing BIAB in my 5 gal kettle. With this size...

How to Calculate True Recipe Volume

IMO the batch size is always assuming a full boil, and is referring to the amount of wort in the fermenter prior to the yeast being pitched. This makes it difficult/inconvenient for those doing partial boils to reproduce recipes, but I think that just comes with the territory. But, that's...

    Brew Day HELP!

Take this with a grain of salt since i'm fairly new to brewing, but couldn't you adjust the hop amounts to get the right IBUs based on the higher gravity?
  7. JohnnySardonic

    Nearly as big as porn

Exactly. Its like the 100 meter sprint. Unless too many IIPAs are involved, then it can feel more like a triathlon.

My first brew... I might of messed up... :(

HBT is a great source of information on all things home brewing, but experience is still a key component. Every time you brew you will learn something new, many times due to these small "mistakes" that happen every once and a while. Just make sure to take notes throughout your brew day, so next...

How do YOU know when fermentatio is done?

I know my beer is done fermenting when it talks to me in my dreams and tells me it's ready to be bottled. It's like a sixth... no, seventh sense. But in all honesty I agree with the previous posts. Two gravity readings with a day in between. If SG is stable, fermentation is done. Then I leave...

Recipe Help: Re-Brewing an "Amber Ale"

I brewed this beer a few months ago, and my friends seem to like, so I'm going to do another batch. The original was a partial mash / partial boil, but I have since upgraded my equipment enough to do AG / full boil. When I brewed this the first time I used ingredients that I had lying...

    Head Retension

It might help if you post the recipe that gave you problems so people can see if anything needs adjusting

    San Diego Beer

I go to SD every couple of months, but I usually just end up at bars in PB or OB, instead of actually doing anything constructive. I've always wanted to do the zoo, but your description isn't too promising. Did you go to the wild animal park? Oh... Beer. I'll try Stone next time i'm there.

    my first brew.

If its too watery for you, send it to me for proper disposal :) congrats on your first brew, welcome to the addiction

    first partial mash starting...now

Good luck, I'm sure you'll make great tasting beer! Just make sure you pre heat your cooler before mashing in. You may have done so -- can't tell from your post -- but it definitely helps my system retain heat more effectively.

    Bottling Tomorrow!

I am no expert on the subject, but from what I've read this isn't always true. People on HBT, some with years of brewing experience, report no off flavors after leaving a beer in primary for a month or more. I left my dubbel in primary for 30 days (at least 16 days after the gravity stabilized)...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

In a lot of home brewing setups (especially those using only one burner), the HLT is used to store the sparge water while the mash is happening, rather than heating up the liquor. At least that's how I see it.

Can't get white rubber airlock stopper to stay in carboy

Mine don't stay very well either (I just started using blowoff tubes for the duration of the primary). I was always afraid to dry the bung because I know Star San doesn't work after it dries. However, if a Star San sprayed paper towel dries it enough, then I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

    malt question

Pick up a pack of 5 gal paint strainer bags from Home Depot or Lowes. I think they are less than 5 bucks. Refer to DeathBrewers sticky at the top of this section of HBT for an easy BIAB partial mash technique. if you are worried about losing mash temp in your kettle, you can wrap it in some...

Bitterness of an american pale ale

+1 This. Since I started getting into home brewing and toying around with hops, I've been trying to expand my beer drinking -- which has led me into the IIPA no mans land (this coming from an eight year BMC drinker). Since then, when I drink APAs or IPAs, I critique them for not having enough of...
