Oxygen and Yeast... to shake or not?

cool, that's why I like asking questions here before I make a decision :rockin: stone it is!

Oxygen and Yeast... to shake or not?

So I was catching up on old NB videos and came across one I had yet to see: At about 25:30 the Wyeast rep talks about aeration. I found it interesting because he says that yeast need 12-15 ppm of O2, but using an oxygen pump only gets you to 8 ppm after 5 minutes. He recommends 45 seconds...

how is mashing done in most professional breweries?

In the videos I've seen they continuously "stir" the mash mechanically, opposed to a lot of us who stir a lot at the beginning and then let the mash rest for an hour. I could be wrong though, never seen it in person.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you are home alone with SWMBO's kid and you sing her to sleep with... Tomorrow we will brew Tomorrow we will brew Tomorrow is IPA day And brewing we will do (happy birthday style)

    What are you drinking now?

A South Swell Double IPA from my local brewery and home brew supply store, Surf Brewery. Next up, HB'd Geordie's Pale Ale.

    Someone knocked off my airlock!

I once came home to a similar situation. I was trying to warm up a Dubbel at the end of fermentation in the garage, and I think a roommate took a sniff and forgot to put the airlock back in tight (I normally ferment in my private space). It was probably open to the elements for 24 hours. I...

What I did for beer today

Bottling a test batch of pumpkin ale and ridding the world of some Ballast Point

    Supplication Clone

I've been planning a sour for a while now, and this is some great information. My one question concerns what Vinnie said about removing the original yeast after fermentation is complete. In the video I've seen (), he says this is to remove any "autolysized yeast character." I'm assuming that RR...

3 weeks in primary. Beer tastes awful.

Just out of curiosity, what was the recipe? It might help point someone on here in a helpful direction.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you are drinking a home brew and you realize that SWMBO is giving you the stink eye because she can tell you are disappointed at some "minor" imperfection, instead of just enjoying the beer.

    Southern Tier Pumking Clone??

I made a scaled down 3g batch of this about two weeks ago. Huge trub layer in the fermenter. Due to carboy constraints I am not racking to a secondary. I'll just do those spice additions in the primary and see how it turns out. Should make bottling interesting. Still smells young, but I can...

What does Strke in at 160 Deg mean

This. But I also like to physically strike my mash, just to remind it who the boss is. I prefer striking it with my mash paddle, but for larger grain bills I will use my fist. That way, it knows I'm not scared of a little heat in my home brewery. "Come at me, bro" is also an acceptable taunt...

What I did for beer today

Moved SWMBO's old fridge into her garage and installed a new one in her kitchen. The old empty fridge is now dedicated to my home brew bottles and future kegs. The first step in converting her garage into my man cave. THEN I will move out of my apartment and into her place...

How many gallons of Brandon O's Graff have been made?

Brewed my first batch with SWMBO last night. 2485 + 5 = 2490

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you're bummed that Firestone is the most "exotic" beer at the county fair. When you smell an APA and critique it for not being hoppy enough, before realizing that not every beer is an IIPA. When you watch season 6 episode 7 of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix and you sympathize with...

Get a storage unit. What kind of home brewer are you? ;) /joking

    Throwing away a batch :-(

My first batch was all extract and I hated it. Same description, like highly carbonated brown soda water. But, my BMC friends liked it enough to drink 40 of them. Whatever you do don't get discouraged. Your brews will get better batch by batch.

    First Wort Hopping

If you like LWH you should try FBH (First Bottle Hop). Drop a pellet into each bottle before you fill it on bottling day. Back on topic, I FWH with BIAB. I mash and batch sparge in my 5 gal kettle and boil in my 9 gal, so I put my FWH addition in my dry boil kettle before I dump in my first...

    First Brewery Tour - Stone

I just returned from a weekend trip to Escondido, CA with SWMBO. We went to the wild animal park on Saturday, but of course my real mission was to visit Stone's Brewery and World Bistro. I knew ahead of time that the Bistro is "slightly" overpriced, but I figured why not. Saturday night we ate...
