    Efficiency calculation help

Okay so allow me to take this a step further. Let's say I have a recipe that has a target OG of 1.055 assuming 80% efficiency. I'm getting 70% efficiency. If my pre-boil volume was 7 gallons of 1.033 wort, then I would need to boil my wort down to 4.2 gallons to achieve my target OG. The only...

    Efficiency calculation help

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly.... Is it true to say you can calculate your OG by looking at your pre-boil volume and gravity reading? Here's an example: I have a pre-boil volume of 6.6 gallons at 1.040. If I plan to boil down to 5 gallons, can I expect an OG of 1.052...

New Jersey brewing laws and new legislation

just read the other thread but i'm still confused.... can you self distribute in NJ? i.e. brewery sells directly to retailer (liquor store or bar). i guess this would be a two tier system

    2 Week Fermentation Possible?

I agree with all that any batch would benefit from more time, but SWMBO decided we're hosting Memorial Day. It would be a crime to supply the party with commercial beer when I have more than enough ingredients to kick out a couple corny kegs. The Centennial Blonde is calling my name....

    2 Week Fermentation Possible?

That's right! I forgot about that recipe. Could be perfect for what I'm trying to do.

    2 Week Fermentation Possible?

So I'd like to brew a 5 gallon batch to serve on Memorial Day. I would be looking to brew a basic 1050 batch with nothing too special. Is it possible to have this beer ready in two weeks? I would force carb, but I'm concerned two weeks won't be enough. has anyone had luck with this quick of a...

My entire basement smells like ...

i've fermented with 3068 very frequently in the past months and can attest to the estery/phenol smell of primary fermentation. it didn't really stink up the whole house, but i only did a 5 gallon batch. I think what your experiencing is not too uncommon for the strain

Yet another "Does this look infected?" thread...

not infected.... got the same thing when i dry hopped. i assumed it was chunks of yeast. surprisingly (and fortunately) when i transferred to bottle, very little ended up in the final product.

Good efficiency, but low OG. Thoughts?

I think I see what you're saying... I'm fairly certain my gravity readings are on point. I guess my volume measurements could be off, but I can't imagine they'd be off by much. Let's assume every measurement was correct, except my final volume. Would a final volume of 5.5 gallons make more sense...

Good efficiency, but low OG. Thoughts?

actually, i think i found my error: my initial efficiency calc! turns out I only hit 70%, so 1051 makes a little more sense...

Good efficiency, but low OG. Thoughts?

Yesterday I brewed an IPA. Grain bill was 11 lbs: 8# 2-Row 0.5# Aromatic 1.5# Vienna 1# Caramel 20L I had a target OG of 1058 assuming 75% efficiency. My efficiency was 77% (Pre-Boil vol 6.9 gallons. Gravity was 1041 at 72F). Considering my target, I figured I'd be right around 1.058 if...

    IPA Recipe Recommendation

to make the linked recipe less hoppy, i would cut FWH magnum addition in half.... maybe try a lower AA hop instead. 123 IBU is probably tongue splitting depending on your personal preference.
