Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

NordeastBrewer: Nope. This place is actually kind of sad. And now...something odd has been happening. I was awoken this morning by a lot of activity going on in my fermenter. The airlock is going crazy. Hell, it's still going crazy. So perhaps...I do have the sugars? Which leads to either...

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Yeah...that's what I was afraid of. I'll dump it in the morning. I've had success with kits before, but I suppose I was jumping the gun a bit with this. Though it seemed pretty simple. I'll ask, but I doubt it. As it is, they're the only game in town and every time I go there I never see...

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

jigidyjim, no, it tasted pretty bitter to be honest. Which I owe a lot to the hops.

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Ah. That might be the thing. No, the grains weren't crushed. I got them from a homebrew store which is the only one in my city and, frustratingly, the person who runs it doesn't know a thing about homebrewing. Checked the hydrometer. Water reads at 1.000

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

people...joke about this? And I just checked my hydrometer, as that sounds really possible, but it doesn't look like there's any cracks. Could adding too much water to the wort in the fermenter do it?

    sorry, accidental double post.

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Um..crushing the grain? I thought I just had to put them in the water. And I'm reading the only part of the hydrometer that starts with 1.000. The OG went right to the red line where a 10 is.

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Oh, crap! Typo! Sorry, it was 155. But...there was a problem. Turns out my boiler...couldn't handle the 12.5lbs of grains. So I had to seperate them and boil them in different pots, with my prime one being nearly overflowed. Would that have been a problem?

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

And yeah, I think I'm reading it correctly.

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

what the instructions said. Steeped the grains for 60mins.

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Hey there...so I'm a bit worried right now... I did my first "from scratch" recipe and it was an all-grain American Ale. Anyways, the original gravity was supposed to come up at about 1.078 and mine came out, well...about 1.010 (at least I think that's what the reading said. It's the red line...

    Crystal 120 and Crystal 70/80?

bierhaus, it actually is, although I'm adding a few different things. The yeast for one and I've decided to throw in some Cascade Hops at the end for aroma's sake. I'm thinking of calling it Audacious Bitch. Thank you so much!

    Crystal 120 and Crystal 70/80?

By the looks of some of the responses, it looks like I should maybe add more in. Would using the whole 2lb package work?

    Crystal 120 and Crystal 70/80?

Eep sorry! The recipe is: 11.5 pounds pale two-row malt 1.5 pounds crystal 120 1.25 oz chinook pellets (12.5 aa%) (15.6 AAUs) @ 90 min 1.0 oz chinook pellets (12.5 AAUs) @ 30 min 0.5 oz chinook pellets (6.25 AAUs) @ flame out 1 tsp Irish moss California Ale Yeast Place crushed grains in water...

    Crystal 120 and Crystal 70/80?

Sorry if it's a basic question. I'm pretty new to this and am worried that if I use the same measurements it would taste awful.

    Crystal 120 and Crystal 70/80?

Hey folks. Ran in to a bit of an unavoidable problem... So I went to my Homebrew shop (sadly the only one in the freakin' city) and asked if they had any Crystal 120. They didn't, but they do have Crystal 70/80 and I ended up getting it. The question is, my recipe calls for about 1.5lbs...

    First Recipe Approval?

Would a bitter wheat beer taste bad? I'm not sure.

    First Recipe Approval?

I think Cascade goes from 4-7% AA And sorry, once again still new to things. .5oz in boil for 60mins or at the 60min mark?

    First Recipe Approval?

Good call on the 50/50 with the malts. As for the hops, would the total needed be 1 or 1.5oz then just put half in at the ten minute mark and the other later? Just clarifying what you meant. :)
