How long does grain (choc malt) keep?

I'm drinking a great ESB made with 2 year old pale malt! Stored in a pet food container and it has crossed the country twice in my two relocations as an economic refugee. If your unmilled grain stills tastes OK, brew with it! rdwhahb!!

    Time or lack there of.....

I haven't brewed an extract batch in years, but I'm a cheap bastid, and AG is less than half the cost. I brew 10 gal in about 4 hours. Cut your time in half by doubling your batch!

    session ipa?

Trader IPA by Unitas in Utah is a good session IPA. Utah has some f'ed up laws about the alcohol in beer, so Trader comes in at 4%, but with lots of hops.

    Why Electric? Confused

I also use electric to brew indoors. Mine is a very simple system that mimics my old propane system. And I would have to go south to visit Yooper!

Inherited about 100 swing-top bottles, how to clean

Try some TSP (Trisodiumphosphate) from the hardware store. This will remove anything from bottles, even the labels from Sam Adams!

No worries! It'll settle out just fine. Should not effect head retention or anything else. RDWHAHB

2 or 3 roller mill? MM or Crankenstein?

I've been using this for the past 5 years: http://schmidling.com/maltmill.htm Very simple, no adjustments and I always get 75% to 80% efficiency. This simple roller mill has paid for it's self many times over!

    U.S. scotch ale hops.

I have used Galena with good results. Good clean strong bittering hop, just don't use to much.

Using pvc for lauter tun manifold.

I have been using pvc connected to my stainless braid for years with no problems. The braid comes from stripping the "innerds" out of a braided water supply line and then crimping the end. Works great!

    Anyone use Cargill malt?

Just bought a 50lb sack of Cargill 2 row malt for a base malt. The local micro brewery sells his base malt for $40 for a 50 lb sack. I have never used Cargill malt, but the microbrewery puts out some awesome beers! Have you ever used it? How was it?

In the market for a new boil kettle?

Looks like a nice pot. I used an Al pot for years. Make sure that your electric heating element will fit the pot. Some Al pots are thicker, and it can be impossible to get the inside nut to catch any threads. (Says the man with a 60 Qt Al pot with an extra hole in it, who now owns a...

    Beer needs more flavor

You may be mashing to low. Check your mash temps, 155 - 160 should give you a fuller beer. 148- 152 will have high ABV, but be thinner.

    Average price for bulk grain?

$38 for 50lbs is a fair price. I'd support your LHBS at that price.
