    Noob Fermentation Temp Question

I've been listening to The Jamil Show some and they mentioned that an Irish Red should ferment at 66F. I have always worked to do my fermentation above 70 degrees as the WLP bottle says it should be above 70. Would anyone mind telling me what fermenting at a lower temp will do for my beer and...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Thanks for this post - brewing this weekend and this is really going to help me improve my process. I'm new to home brewing - did 2 Extracts then jumped into mini-mash for the past 4 batches. I have a couple questions I hope you (or anyone) could help me with I really like your idea of tea...

    Rookie Minimash Steeping

Yeah thats actually the guide I was reading. Really great guide. The folks at my LHBS told me the ladel technique, but the dipping into the sparge water as outlined in that guide seems much easier! I was just wondering if one method is preferable to the other.

    Rookie Minimash Steeping

Great! Thanks Yooper! I can guarantee that I won't be giving up any time soon! All grain is in my future - just gonna get mini's down pat first. I'm just loving this hobby. Can't wait to get this mini-mash and make these improvements! Sounds a bit like making rice honestly - get it to...

    Rookie Minimash Steeping

OOOOHHHH I'm supposed to be stirring this guy up?! I've been taking the "don't sqeeze the bag" all wrong then. So I should be stirring the grains inside my grain bag while i do this? Great info - I'm learning so much from these boards! So you just plop it in the cooler and forget about it for...

    Rookie Minimash Steeping

Oh wow - so you don't even leave it on a burner while you steep? Just heat it up to a target temp, insulate the pot, cover it up and let the grains steep for an hour? or do you leave the pot in the oven you set for 157?

How much sanitizer hurts the finished beer?

Here is a great thread on sanitizers and cleaners (like Oxyclean) that has helped me a lot! https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/sanitizer-question-54932/

    Rookie Minimash Steeping

I have used the mini-mash method for the last 3 batches of beer - 2 batches are sitting in bottles and the first turned out pretty well. I really like to make notes on try on previous batches - figure out what went well, what went right, where can I improve/streamline the process. A...

    Bottling in a Growler

Really - my LHBS said it was ok to bottle in. I have it inside a 5 gallon bucket with the lid on just in case though! I sure hope it doesn't blow!

    Bottling in a Growler

Ok - Thats something I was wondering about. After you open up the growler - how long can you keep it around before it goes flat?

    Bottling in a Growler

I hope so! I just bottled in it. Hopefully I didn't over or underfill...could be exciting though.

    Bottling in a Growler

Awesome! Thanks. So if I'm leaving an inch or so I probably shouldn't fill it all the way to the lip, like i do my bottles? Maybe a half inch under? Out of curiosity, what happens if you underfill? Does it blow up? or does it just not carbonate?

    Bottling in a Growler

So I went to the local home brew shop today to pick up some things and my Dad wanted to come check it all out with me. He decided to pick up a growler so I could just bottle him up a growler and he can just use that instead of me giving him a 6 pack. So, is bottling into a growler the same...

    "The Thief" and Hydrometer readings

Just used Oxyclean to clean a round of bottles - wow. Dropped them in, went on a run, checked my email, messed around online (about 1.5 hours total) and the labels were all floating on top of the buckets! Pretty amazing. I did have to rinse them really well and might give them another rinse...

    "The Thief" and Hydrometer readings

I think in that podcast (great podcast btw, been listening/watching a lot of them) he said that it doesn't kill the good bacteria in your septic system.

    "The Thief" and Hydrometer readings

Awesome! Any magical dilution? Or 1/2 cup per gallon of warm water for you? And you give everything a rinse after this cleaning, right?

    "The Thief" and Hydrometer readings

Just bought a 15lb thing of oxyclean at Costco today actually for this purpose. I noticed it had all these blue beads in it. I imagine those are purely for marketing it as high tech, but just to double check - I didn't somehow get an oxyclean that has soap in it and these are normal and safe for...
