New guy here trying to decide on a starter kit

The glass carboys (and "better bottles") are nice because you can watch during your fermentation.... The plastic buckets will produce beer with the same quality from what I've read. When I bought my setup a short time ago, I bought mostly glass because I thought it looked cool. I did...

    Hello! New guy here

Ah, I misunderstood. Should have looked more closely. :o Yes the primary buckets in either kit are large enough for active fermentation. But I only think one of them comes with a lid. The bottling bucket might not. My bottling bucket did not come with a lid (which is necessary to ferment)...

    Hello! New guy here

Also, have you checked out this post yet? A lot of great info here courtesy of llazy_llama!

UH OH a freaking heat wave is coming.

Well that statement disqualifies me, but I'll offer my $0.02 anyhow :p I just got hit with a heat wave, and even if you can create a slightly cooler environment, it will still (usually) be too hot anywhere indoors if the ambient temperature outside is around 80. My vote is definitely option...

    Hello! New guy here

I am newb at this too. I just bought my setup a few weeks ago and already have 4 brews under my belt.... two of which have sadly had some trouble :( But! After having gone through the confusion myself and the inevitable mistakes that come along with it I think I can help with a couple...

Why is my yeast still on top?

I brewed two different extract beers (American Imperial Pale Ale & American Amber) from "Brewer's Best" with Safale S-05 dry yeast with starters. The Pale Ale did not have a krausen after two weeks, but the Amber did. It looked exactly like your picture. I had a sample when I transfered it to...

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

So this freezer is being delivered next week. According to my rough calculations (earlier in this thread) it should fit two primary carboys. However, I'll definitely let you know for sure after it arrives. Cheers :mug:

    Ah Oh :-(

Ya, 60 months might be the right time frame for the two batches I just fermented at around 85 degrees!:p

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

Awesome to hear! Yeah, I searched Craigslist too, but to no avail. Nothing that worked for my particular requirements. I figured that I was just going to have to get a new one. I plan to buy tomorrow! :ban: I'm guessing it would work for both... but that is a guess! Hopefully...

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

Wow... sounds like quite a setup! Nicely done! BTW: Thanks for the info for the Renco controller. As far as the chest freezer goes. They don't specify whether the dimensions they give are interior or exterior. I have to guess they are talking about exterior. By estimating the...

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

I truly hope you are right! Will do. This is my second favorite option... I might still go this route if I chicken out of the chest freezer setup. That sounds simple enough... Is the love controller that much more difficult to install? I'm an engineer, but kind of a newb when it...

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

I did search a little, but I didn't find anything that would work specifically with a chest freezer. I'll take another search. Thanks. They were fermenting one full day before the heat hit. The porter with the S-04 went crazy and I was glad I had a blow-off tube. It's Now day 3.5 and...

Heat wave during peak Fermentation! Need temp control.

Well, I have a couple wonderful batches of banana kerosene in my two primaries. Just guessing, though. Very unusual heat wave struck cali central coast and toasted my beer! Been 74-78 ambient even with fans and closed shades; Fermometer reading is off the charts. If I had to guess, I would...

    Quick starsan question

Lots of ingredients! Must Brew! Recipe help?

Oh, you weren't drinking Baltika, that was Natural Ice! Damn, how do they get that antifreeze/garlic combo? Battery acid infusion in the secondary? Well bud, you're welcome to as much as you can drink of this brew. It has just been racked into the primary. In a couple months we'll see how...
