Stirring ferment batch? Harmful or helpful?

Seems it may be a helpful technique in slow to end fermentations Some fermentations begin to slow down toward the end because of premature flocculation of the fermenting yeast. A simple technique to keep these sorts of fermentations on track is to "rouse" the fermentation. In a commercial...

Stirring ferment batch? Harmful or helpful?

sorry not trying to spark any wars :) I did say this was before the beer hit its FG. Nothing to do with clearing the beer. Seems this is a touchy subject. I only meant this as a way to HELP the yeast. We use stirplates to keep all yeast in a fermentation with a starter, im just thinking about...

Stirring ferment batch? Harmful or helpful?

Sorry, i didnt mean physically stirring (with a spoon), i meant more of a gentle rocking of the fermenter.

Stirring ferment batch? Harmful or helpful?

this begs the question. what if the vessel was under the pressure of CO2 (no oxygen could make its way in). Does rousing the yeast help or hurt? This would be before the beer has hit its FG and the yeast is still working...

    Electric Teakettle RIMS

Any results? Still sounds interesting, I just dont know how well an overflow mechanism would function as you would want to be pumping thru the element at a fairly high rate.

Looking for someone with a 1-1/4" punch

I was able to drill 2 elements holes with 1 1-3/8" HF step drill bit. I wouldnt be able to do a 3rd tho.

    Plate Chiller Technique?

I dont own a plate chiller, but my thoughts would be similar to OneHoppyGuy's comment.. After your 1 minute of full throttle sanitizing, why not try throttling the wort to 33% or less, and see what the temp is exiting the plate chiller.. if its in the 70deg range, just go right into the...

    Electric Teakettle RIMS

i love the outside of the box thinking, but a couple challenges come to mind. How do you "seal" the kettle. It needs to be a closed vessel in and out port so that you can pump wort thru it, unless you go to some overflow system but that just sounds messy. Also, temperature control, how are you...

    Another eHerms brew setup

That would be another option, I never really thought of simply re-plastering the brewing area. hmm.. something to think about. But yes, we share the same mindset, brew first, pretty later... especially due to once i started this process (6 months ago), i had tore my previous AG system apart...

    Another eHerms brew setup

Oh sorry. Actually all of the 240V power circuit (incl SSR's) are located in that blue toolbox just below the main tier. The green box is only 120V control for contactors, ssr & pump. They are cooled passively (no fan), just heatsink. Have had no issues after 5-6 batches + lots of pre-testing.

    Another eHerms brew setup

Specs are 25ft of 1/2 cu tubing, fittings are soldered and connect to the camlock male with 1/2 FPT to 1/2 OD tubing fitting. I have yet to use the mlt false bottom. Im optimistic, if the flow rate is low i may add some additional slits. Its made from the top cut off of one of the kegs i...

    Another eHerms brew setup

Hey, I wasnt planning on controlling the fan via the control panel. It will have a dimmer switch installed near the fan for control. This is very similar to the fan i picked up http://bustan.ca/product_detail.asp?menuID=1&SID=13&PID=1192 I will just be doing a hood over the BK, the amount...

    Another eHerms brew setup

yes its definitely an UN-finished basement. the house is about 130 years old. The exterior walls are 3-4 ft thick in some places, with 12" x 12" floor joints. My plans are actually to put up studded walls in the area of the brewery. im hunting for a stainless sink + table as well. I...

3 wire 240v receptacle in garage

I was faced with a similar challenge, what I did was 3 wire (2 hot + gnd) 240V fed thru contactors for the elements, and then a seperate 120V circuit for control&pumps. If you want pilot lights for the elements, they will need to be 240V

Are uncrushed grains 11+ months old still good to use for brewing?

Id echo edwort's comments, if its clean and dry you should be safe.. I took a 2 yr hiatus from brewing and had a couple sacks of barley sit over that time. the beer was just find afterwards

I have to blow off some steam

my only comment... if you only knew the kind of restrictions we had in ontario (canada).. you would be plenty happy ALL alcohol sale is heavily gov't regulated.. we can ONLY buy beer in either THE BEER STORE (which is owned by big breweries, (no craft beers).).. or from the LCBO (liqour...
