Increase Hop Utilization by adding Extract at end of Boil?

Utilization is a factor of the time and gravity of the boil. A higher concentration of sugars makes it more difficult for the isomerized alpha acids to dissolve.

Best tools for a Son of a Fermentation Chamber

Do you have any pictures of your build?

Best tools for a Son of a Fermentation Chamber

Thanks. These have got to significantly increase the life of the chamber. I'm assuming a hack saw would chew through the brass tubing just fine? Astro, yes you use liquid nails on the walls. But, the top and front of the box should be removable so that you can add and remove the fermentor...

Increase Hop Utilization by adding Extract at end of Boil?

Did you just read Palmer's book or did you find this info elsewhere? He has a good portion of info in his book about adding extract near flameout. As you said there will be a better utilization of the hops with a lower saturation of sugars in the wort. The key is boiling the DME/LME long enough...

Best tools for a Son of a Fermentation Chamber

Thanks for the brass sleeve idea. Did you still add the gromets to the end of the foam too? I figure that would be purely cosmetic if the tubing was used. The dowels allow you to have removable wall panels. The dowels act as pins to hold the walls together to form tight seals.

Anybody use bottled water instead of boiling the additional 2 gallons when brewing?

I've used tap water straight from the faucet for a dozen batches with no issues. Plus it airates the wort!

Why do i still have floating bubbles? Infection or continued fermentation?

That looks like an infection... If the beer is drinkable, I'd still rack under this stuff and bottle/keg it. If it tastes good carb it up and drink it. Maybe drink it on the faster side and not let it sit too long...

Second Day of Fermentation - Airlock Issues

In the future use vodka or star san solution in your airlock. The beer is fine, you've just got a really active fermentation. The pressure is flowing out of the bucket, there is little chance of contamination. Some brewers even do an open fermentation... Regardless, everything is fine, the beer...

Adding Fruit to Wheat Beer Kit

I believe the OP meant the strawberry extract flavoring. Not additional fermentables.

    Need some advice

A bucket works fine, you just don't get to see your beer clarify. Option 1, it will be great, no hope needed.

Best tools for a Son of a Fermentation Chamber

With all of the plans I’ve read I feel I could build one of these in the dark at this point. But I can’t seem to find any info on what the best tool to drill through polystyrene is. Will a normal drill and bit chew everything to pieces or will it make a perfect hole for the dowels? And is it...

    Water from airlock into carboy

Star San solution or vodka is the way to go. I'm sure you've picked up on it now, but remove your airlock prior to taking off the lid.

    Heineken

I wasn't a fan in my younger drinking days. I generally enjoy it now, but it is insanely expensive here, so I rarely drink one. It does have that unique almost skunked flavor. I also find Grolsch to taste slightly similiar and honestly if something tastes remotely close to Grolsch, Grolsch wins...

    How long in secondary fermentation?

Since you are in glass you can guage the time needed by visual clues. Your beer will clarify and settle out over time. Once it's clear, then take a grav sample and bottle as normal. This goes faster or slower depending on the brew and a lot of other factors. As for the temp, most off flavors...

    Dear god, give me winter

I'm going to have to agree with 'bring on the winter weather.' I didn't think my basement could even get this warm. The swamp cooler temps are no where near stable. I just researched a SOFC that might become a reality next weekend.

Can you pitch too much yeast?

Extreme overpitching can very much so create an explosive fermentation. I pitched a very low grav beer (1.035) onto a full yeast cake and within an hour had fermentation start up. two hours later had to add weight plates to my brew bucket to ensure it didn't get blown off. The beer turned out...

    Just started brewing

i started with a Mr beer kit as well. that was in March. I'm now sitting at 63 gallons brewed through July. it's incredibly addictive. by far the best advice i can give you is to sit on things longer and have patience. longer primaries than the 7 days the kits and Mr beer directions call for has...

Quick - help!!! Is it ok to use Wyeast smack after an hour?

You pretty much answered your own question there. Larger Primary container, which you can't do anything about right now. So a blow off tube it is!

    Does sugar affect gravity reading?

Bah!!! I meant LME. Yeah Sugar is 46ppg and DME is 42ppg. pretty negligible. I need to stop responding from my cell phone...

Has anyone ever bought a commercial beer this this much yeast?

This looks like a year old unfiltered wheat beer. I used to have to stock up on Bell's Oberon since it is seasonal. I once had a few that got lost in the beer fridge for a year. That's exactly what it looked like.
