Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Interesting. I actually love a good peaty scotch.. Laphroig, for example, is excellent. I like IPAs fine but do not find the flavor to be at all like a good smokey peaty scotch. It's also interesting you mention la fin du monde, I think that's pretty good beer if you like the belgian style...

    running wort through immersion chiller

That's my point. There's nothing gained by adding salt unless you need colder than 32f water... Which you don't for our purposes. Except maybe for a lager or for making ice cream, which are valid points. Again, you can't dump the salt water on the lawn and I wouldn't put it in my washing...

    running wort through immersion chiller

That's a cute snarky response and I agree that just because something has been done that way by a lot of other people and for a long time that that's no guarantee that it it's safe. But on the other hand if it is as dangerous as you make it sound then I think we have had ample opportunity for...

    running wort through immersion chiller

Thanks. I'll post after I try it myself. As to the salt issue, water won't freeze when you add ice, unless of course it is below freezing outside. Salt allows water to be liquid at below 32f but it doesn't give the water more cooling capacity. 1 lb of ice and water will have the same effect as...

    Dummy it down for me...

Follow P-J's "simple eherms diagram" it uses a switch with contractors to power both kettles. Then if you read the thread there is another simpler diagram with a single dpdt center off high amp switch that replaces the contractors. Parts numbers are provided. P-J is a real asset around here.

    Dummy it down for me...

To follow up on what I said previously, the range type switch, if you choose to go that route is called an "infinite switch" Here is a url explaining it. http://americanhvacparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=INF2194110&Category_Code=ES6 Just be sure whatever switch you...

    Dummy it down for me...

Pretty cool but it looks like it is anything but simple. A switch probably the simplest solution.

    Dummy it down for me...

You can simply use a dpdt center off toggle switch to switch the current from the hlt to the bk. Then the pid can control both vessels but only one at a time. Alternatively, I believe the dial type control sold for electric ranges can be used. I've seen them at my local hardware store.

    Dummy it down for me...

If you are using the auberins pid then it will adjust the element by cycling it on and off. The manual mode on the pid allows you to do this.. well.. manually. So you don't need a switch there. But maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are asking..

    3/4in brass valves

I would be very interested in at least two. I agree a pic would be nice. Paypal?

    Lauter screen

I too would be interested next time around. I need a keg sized one. I too wonder if it would be an effect kettle screen. My kettle is 36" round though so if I went with a second screen it would have to be 3'X3'. I'll pm you an email address that you can add to your list. And sorry to be a...

    5-md-hc Little Giant Pump

I hate you. I just ordered a march 815 center inlet for $50 more. God what terrible timing! Maybe I need two pumps after all... if only money grew on trees! Good luck selling it. At that price it will not last long. If it's still here in the morning maybe I'll have convinced myself that I...

Great price on copper coil at home depot.

One more thing, the super cheap copper tubing sears is selling as "utility coil" is not ASTM rated. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me it is .020" wall thickness. For reference, type M tubing is .028" thick, type L .040", and type k .049. These numbers are for 1/2" tube and would...

Great price on copper coil at home depot.

I looked into this more and my remarks above are not quite correct so I wanted to set facts straight in case anyone else reads this. Apologies for the bad info. Type l, m, and k are nominally sized. The size is an approximation of the id but the actual id will be a function of wall thickness...

    IC questions

I like a simple setup. Fewer parts and easier to clean parts. An IC can cool very quickly if you are recirculating. Clean up is super simple and you just put it in the boil to sanitize. And I store it inside my brew kettle. Whatever time you think you are saving with the plate chiller you are...

3/4" weldless fitting and other plumbing questions

Bump. I could have the keggle fitting welded but the boil kettle is a thick walled aluminum pot.. I don't know if that can be welded. I'd really prefer weldless if it's possible. Any ideas?

coolant lines in Side by Side fridges

There should be a low pressure coil in the freezer, probably behind the back wall. Then there will be a vent (or two) between the 2 sides on the inside wall. The vent is then opened or closed via a manual linkage or electronic motor. This is how the temp on the fridge side is regulated. The only...

    running wort through immersion chiller

I plan on doing pretty much the same thing but with a few important changes. I'm building a eherms rig and plan to reuse the herms coil as a chiller. Heat the water bath, circulate wort through it to heat the mash. Cool the bath and circulate wort through it to chill before pitching. It's...

Great price on copper coil at home depot.

My understanding is that soft copper tubing is nominal sized, the O.D. is constant and the I.D. will vary slightly depending on wall thickness (type L, M, etc.). So thin walled or not it should still be standard 3/8" O.D. and should not present any problems. caveat emptor.. I am no plumber!

Is Star San Milky When Mixed?

You should mix it with distilled water, it will keep longer (assuming you don't use it all on brew day). Also, store it in a cool dark place. I've heard that when it gets cloudy it's lost its efficacy but my experience is that it will be instantly cloudy when mixed with hard water.
