    NHC Results

Unfortunately that’s just part of competitions. As much as the BJCP attempts to create a fair environment things like place in the flight, what categories get grouped together, and that judges palate at that particular moment have big impacts. Then you have the mini best of show aspect. Last...

Gelatin in Primary Without Cold Crash - Worth the Effort?

The colder it is the better and faster it works. Will likely still have an effect on dropping yeast at room temp just not as much. For chill haze I believe that the haze needs to be formed to have the gelatin drop it out so would not be effective for that. don’t remember what book I read that in...

I’m still confused...if they have finished the judging at all the sites, why are they still saying judging entries?

Infection after 3 months in two batches

I would change out all plastic/tubing you have on the cold side. Both batches indicates it was something you ran both beers through like maybe a bottling wand. After years of use things like that and tubing get scratches that can’t be sanitized.

    adding bicarbonates and epsom salt

I just brewed this and had similar feelings about the additions I needed to hit his profile. I took the Sulfates down to 225 and i wish I had come down more. Still a great beer as is but like mabrungard said, it finishes extremely dry. I think lowering the sulfate down more would have really...

Will carbonation prevent a beer from clearing?

I add gelatin and start carbing at the same time usually. Never have a problem getting clear beer. I have a Helles that has been sitting carbed for about 2.5 weeks now and just starting to clear. Should be good to go by the time I package for NHC. If the haze is caused by something gelatin can...

    Competition Beer Storage

Pretty much what I assumed. I have never been involved in organizing a competition so there is probably a good reason but just curious, what is the purpose of closing off the drop off/shipping window 2-4 weeks prior to the judging?

    Competition Beer Storage

Any judges or competition organizers out there know what the norm is as far as how beers are stored once turned in to a competition? I ask because I’m trying to determine if it is worth it to try and ship beer cold. No point in paying extra to ship cold if they will just sit in warm storage for...

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

Anyone happen to know if there is a better way to view the current gravity and temp when away from home other than the complicated process of using a spreadsheet on a cloud?

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

I’m no rocket scientist so I’m not sure how/if the pressure will effect the readings but I find it common under normal conditions for the Tilt to be anywhere from right on to about 1.5 gravity points higher than my hydrometer (which I know to be accurate). All things considered I think it is...

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

I have had mine for a few years now and have found it very useful in satisfying my curiosity and keeping me from taking too many samples but it does not replace a hydrometer. It seems to be accurate until close to final gravity but then it is hit or miss. I always use a hydrometer to ensure I...

Spray nozzles setups for recirculating wort during the mash?

This is what I do as well. I have played around with manifolds and “spraying” devices but have found that the tube laying on top works the best.

    Janet's Brown Ale

I'm thinking I will probably tone the additions down a little while keeping it high on SO4 side. Thanks!
