    Italian Pilsner Discussion

Well, I'm glad to hear that beer in Italy got better, and I'm looking forward to trying some on my next visit there. Whenever that may be. Regarding beers in the US: I don't know about the 80s, but the situation has steadily improved since my arrival here in the early 90s!

    Italian Pilsner Discussion

I'm not intending to put a damper on the enthusiasm here, but I have consistently bad memories of Italian pilsners. That was in the 80s; did they get better in the mean time?

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Christian, I'm not sure I understand 100% what you are saying, but you also need to cool the hot side of the Peltier(s). So just the cold side loop from the Peltier to the keg is only half of the work. Getting rid of the heat from the Peltier is as important as cooling your beer or wort. (The...

DIY mash basket from 400 micron stainless mesh

Update: fabricated a shield (and new support brackets to replace those metal bars in the last pic above, while I was at it) for the grain basket. Recirculation worked great this time (wheat beer #4 for this year). It takes a long time though until the wort is clear.

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Fancy metal strips to hold the roasting drum, actual dump handle, large area cooling fan: does not look like junkyard to me!

How many pounds of roasted coffee in 2020

Ruint, who is drinking all your coffee? That seems like a lot to roast, even for a large family.

    I'm about to give up.

Late to the party, but anyways: Congratulations on getting your Hefeweizen mojo back, Jayjay! :drunk: :bigmug:  It's odd though that you had to turn to an LME kit to get the banana flavor back. Hard to believe that it would be something with the mashing, but I guess it must be...

Anyone regret DIY AC glycol chiller?

Looks nice, with the aluminum profiles and the Lexan sides. The copper coil inside the yellow cooler is the evaporator? And for now you are just hooking up one secondary loop, with the pump sitting at the bottom of the cooler? That thing can probably drive a bunch of loops. If I ever get a...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Coming back to roasting: What made a huge difference towards better consistency for me is the roasting chamber insert/extension for the SR500. Also, only filling it with 1/3 of a pound per batch. That seems to yield more reproducible results, independent of how much the bean volume increases...

    RIP Riptide pump

Well, isn't that what happened here (impeller touching housing)?

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Regarding tasting notes/coffee descriptions: there seems to be a lot of code, and not always used consistently. For example 'clean cup' is supposed to mean 'no flavor defects'. Which should be a given if I bother to buy green coffee! I mean, why would a specialty coffee dealer import and sell...

    RIP Riptide pump

Supposedly that pump contains a small easily lost washer; does that washer set the clearance between the impeller/magnet assembly and the housing? Regarding the brown material: what is the impeller made of? It looks the same as the piece that apparently is a magnet, but I assume it's not the...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

I don't know whether my taste buds are discerning enough for this crowd, but my last order was from Burman. I tried their three variety sampler (~$6/lb) and two of their cheaper varieties (~4/lb), and to my surprise they all work well both as americanos (espresso extracted with about twice the...

    RIP Riptide pump

Well, whatever that silver cover was made off (stainless?), is now in the beer. I guess it depends on how close you are already to your maximum daily chromium, nickel and iron intake... :mug:

    RIP Riptide pump

So, the material of that thingamajig, impeller, propeller, magnet, is that rusty steel, or brown plastic (bakelite? does that still exist?), or something else? The worn-through shiny coating is not a deposit any of my beers would leave, I'm pretty sure about that. To me it looks more like a...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

That's a very compact setup, tracer bullet. Sticking the cold side of the peltier directly into the liquid is certainly the most efficient way. I like that mine is modular; I can cool the fermenter and kegs (and anything I stick into the enclosure, like wine bottles, if necessary). I think for...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

I installed a quieter radiator fan; it's also cheaper. Only downside: the blue light. (Actually, it looks pretty cool straight through the radiator, and is otherwise mostly shielded from view.) Apparently the kids these days demand LEDs in their fans. Cooler Master SickleFlow 120 V2 Blue Led...

Why do we sparge with hot water?

I'd make sure the hot tap water is safe for human consumption, independent of brewing usage.

Hole size for heater element, malt pipe mesh size?

For my basket I only triple-folded the top edge, in order to hide the open edge of the mesh. Seems to work ok. This is a 10 inch diameter basket, about nine inch tall, with two U-shaped supports bent from 1/8 inch thick stainless steel. The mesh is riveted to the U's. Here is the link to the...
