Too much water below false bottom?

Essentially I am mashing with an extra 5 quarts diluting the mash beneath the false bottom. Would this cause my setup to be unable to hit 70-80%?

Too much water below false bottom?

I leave the 1.25 gallons in the mash tun. Basically I'm doing everything the same as people mashing in a cooler except with 1.25 gallons of water just sitting between the kettle bottom and the false bottom

Too much water below false bottom?

I got my false bottom from more beer. I regret not just making one but it was the quick solution at the time. http://morebeer.com/view_product/7408/102309/False_Bottom_and_Boil_Kettle_Screen_for_8_Gallon_Heavy_Duty_Kettle I also don't have a diptube in my kettle. Since I also boil in that...

Too much water below false bottom?

I have bad efficiency and have lived with that for a while (65%) and tried a couple things this time to try and fix it. 1- Followed Bobby M's double batch sparge very closely. I hit all my temperatures and used two thermometers to make sure. I used the water/grist ratio he suggests he uses as...

    Crush too fine?

So running it through the crusher twice would help? I just want to make sure I'm not going to hurt the beer. I've never had a problem with a stuck sparge

    Crush too fine?

Is there a downside to a crush being too fine besides the change of it getting stuck? I crush my grains at the LHBS and was thinking about running it thought twice for my next batch to see if that helps with efficiency.

Pliny the Elder cloned down to an IPA instead of IIPA.

I would look up Blind Pig by Russian River. Pliny is their big name and biggest seller but Blind Pig is the IPA that started it, and it is amazingly tasty. Its abv is around where you want yours to be, I can go check a bottle downstairs to give you an exact number.

    Wheat in APA?

Do you think with one pound of wheat you get it as clear as without? I bottle condition my beers too

    Wheat in APA?

I was curious if anyone has used wheat malt in an American Pale? I think it might add a nice touch to the beer but there were a few things I was concerned about, mainly haze. I was thinking 2 or 3 lbs in a 5 gal batch. I want to make an ale with a color around 7 or 8 and I'm worried that it...

    Mashing in a Kettle

My water is at pH level of 8. Someone at the LHBS said he uses gypsum to add hardness and drop it down which is what I was planning on using with my next batch. I have some testers but as of now I was just going off the water report for my county and word of mouth. The 5.2 has not changed...

    Mashing in a Kettle

I mash in my brewing kettle with horrible results. I have an 8 gallon kettle with morebeer's false bottom: http://morebeer.com/view_product/7408/102216/False_Bottom_and_Boil_Kettle_Screen_for_8_Gallon_Heavy_Duty_Kettle There are a few inches of dead space between the bottom of the kettle...

    Fermentation Died

I have not checked the SG since pitching. It has been a hotter temperature in this area the past week or so maybe that is affecting it? I know that 74 is high but I have pitched this stuff higher before I had a wort chiller and never had any problems. I understand that this would probably...

    Fermentation Died

I realize this is turning into a 2 question post as I continue to type. 1) I just did my second all grain batch. I was off on my OG by .02 so I'm not too worried about that (1.052 instead of 1.054). I pitched the yeast at the normal temperature of 74. It's an ale and I used S-05. It started...
