    Ranco Wiring

I just wired one of these up myself yesterday. A tip that I saw (and used) on the person's website that I based my wiring on was to tie a knot in the extension cord inside the box so that if the cord gets pulled, it's pulling against the knot rather than the screw terminals. Gets kinda...

    The Fermoire

Thank you all! It has continued to work fine for me it went into "production" last year. I have to admit that I still haven't finished the top 2 chambers though. I've even got all of the pumps and radiators to do it already. Can't come up with another excuse aside from laziness. RMCK...

    Cheap Co2 bottles?

Wow, I was just looking for a CO2 tank today and Houston's not that far. Are 60lb tanks the ones that are about 5 ft tall? That doesn't fit the subtleness that I was hoping for, but $50....................... Hmm....

    Rhizomes planted!

Hopefully the excitement will continue for both of us when these things get introduced to the Texas summer and they realize that they're not in the Pacific Northwest any more. :D EdWort had good luck there in your part of woods last year, so fingers are crossed.

    Rhizomes planted!

Wow, that's no lie.... Two of my five are above ground now, and they've only been planted for 5 days.... This is my Cascade. It's already almost two inches tall! Crazy.....

    Rhizomes planted!

I got side tracked, so my rhizomes had to spend a week in the fridge, but I finally got out and started working on 'em this past weekend. I was originally thinking that I'd plant them along the fence and try training them horizontally, but when I got back there with the shovel I decided that it...

    collapsing braid in mlt

I sheltered my braid beneath a 12$ stainless steel "grease splatter shield" (whatever that is??) that I stumbled across at Linens & Things.... Has worked really well! There are a couple of pics of it on this page: LINK It's a little hard to see, but there's a braid below that coming...

    rhizomes available at Freshops now

Just got an email from Freshops stating that their rhizomes are now available. Pretty good selection! I picked up a few just now to experiment with this year!

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

4956.5 + 5 = 4961.5 I was fortunate enough to have some of the "real deal" from EdWort himself last weekend... A nice little 8-month aged batch. Awesome stuff!! Had to get off my butt and make some after that.

    manifold v.s. false bottom

I use a braid in conjunction with a stainless steel grease splatter shield that I stumbled across one day on a trip to Linens-N-Things w/ SWMBO. I was building my all grain system at the time and couldn't bring myself to pay what they want for a custom fit false bottom, so this caught my eye...

    Drilling through stainless

I used a step bit on mine... Was pretty nerve racking drilling the first hole into the first pot! I did 9 holes total in three pots without incident. Might check a place like Harbor Freight for a step bit if you don't have one. I wound up having to go to Home Depot to get the size I needed...

Sanyo 4912 Conversion Finally Operational (w/ pics)

Looks great! I'm jealous. I need to finish my long-running parts gathering too and switch to kegging. I've got 4 corny kegs and a couple of CO2 regulators, but got sidetracked on that project. Sure do hate bottling............................

    New Brewing system gadgets

Wow, this is awesome! Pretty sure I've seen similar looking pictures on NASA's website. I think you do it injustice by putting it in a "brew shed"..... Call it a "brew cathedral" or something at least!

    Smithwick's clone

Almost hate to bring this thread back to the surface, but.... I had Smithwick's #2 last night, from the same 6-pack as the first one. It was a completely different beer. The one I drank that caused me to post this in the first place had a slight creamy flavor/feel, and I swear I could...

How to Insure a Proper Vacuum Seal - Reynolds Handi Vac

Thanks for the tip! I was (still am actually) having seal problems on mine. I broke 1lb packs into 1 ounce packs and put 1 oz into a qt-sized Handi-Vac bags. Several of those lost their seal, so I went back out and picked up some gallon-sized Handi-Vac bags, put as many qt-sized ones into...

    foam board for fermentation chiller

I couldn't find any of the thick stuff here in my town either.... Lowes (at least here) sells some that is 3/4" thick in 4x8 sheets... Its made by Dow, is blue, and has an R4 value. I wound up buying that and sandwiching 3 sheets together with glue. I've read that it's used in commercial...

    Design Contest:Fermentation chiller/bookcase

Maybe make the other chamber your cold one and slightly shorten the depth of that bottom cubby hole in your "corny closet" and fit the compressor in that pocket to make it flush with the back. ? Or if it came to it (would imagine you're going to be limited on splitting the fridge parts up...

Pretty cool! Where are you putting the compressor and other fridge guts?

    Design Contest:Fermentation chiller/bookcase

I think you're winning the contest so far. When I did mine, I made a conscious decision to make a box within a box. I made the wood frame, and then within it, a sealed insulation box on the premise that wood would be transferring heat into the chamber. Granted, only a small amount...
