    Let's talk about Oxygen.

That's good to know. I have always heard of hitting the wort with O2 again on big beers 12-18 hrs later, but have always been too nervous to try. It's not too often that I go for high gravity, but I will have to give this a go on my next RIS. Cheers.

What's wrong with spunding off the gas manifold?

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I have yet to build/buy a glycol chiller and have a porter that's finished fermenting in my CF5. Since I can't crash in the conical is there any issue with doing a closed transfer at room temp (70F)? Any tips on keeping foam down or anything I should be aware of beforehand?

How do you tell someone their homebrew isn't, well, good?

I have been in the same situation once or twice. If he doesn't ask... (Which you being a fellow homebrewer, he should) don't mention it. If he does ask, just ask what he thought and what he liked about it. You can give some constructive feedback that's not too harsh and it sounds like you're...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I brewed a 5 gallon English porter yesterday. Aside from being shy a gallon after sparging, I hit my OG and had a relatively smooth brew day. I made a 2L starter of Wyeast 1318 and pitched at 63 deg. Will be holding temp for 48 hrs then ramping up a degree per day until I reach 70. First time...

    Electric Homebrew System?

There are several options to choose from really, each having their pros/cons. First, you may want to decide how much power you have available (120/240) which will help filter down some options for you. I'm currently waiting to see what Spike and SS brewtech come out with for ebiab this winter...

I'm not massaging anything lol. I was trying to show that I stood corrected in my assumption that is was only 1/4 - 1/3 of the coil. You said over 75%. I was then curious how that was possible and pulled it up to provide as reference. RDWHAHB

Link doesn't work, but I pulled dimensions from Spike. Looks like half the coil is submerged.

I'm glad the CF10 is working out for you for 5g batches. I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to do so by any means. I guess the reason for my post was to provide some things to be aware of if that's the route you take. I agree the thermowel may be a non-issue especially since you are using a...

Oregon complete electric 10 gal HERMS system / Portland OR - $1000

Wow, hell of a deal. If I was even somewhat close I wouldn't think twice about it. Good luck and safe travels!

Hey I thought I would provide an alternate op from most. I was in the same conundrum a few mos ago when I decided Spike was the conical I wanted. So yes, you can use a cf10 for 5 gal batches for the off-chance you need more volume out of every x brews. I am at the point I only make 5g because...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

So I am currently fermenting a session IPA under pressure in my CF5 and I'm noticing the pressure sitting exactly at 15psi on day 3 of fermenting. I was under the impression the spike prv would trigger at 13psi, but I have released the pressure down to 10 a few times already today and it keeps...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I added the short legs and new bracing shelf onto my CF5. It's sturdier than I would have expected. I don't have any concerns since it will be stationary for the most part. I didn't personally have a need for casters.

Beginner question regarding SS BREWTECH UNITANK

I recently purchased a Spike unitank with gas post and was curious about using a spunding valve. Can you elaborate on what you would use it for? It's just to release pressure at a set psi, right? Is there a benefit to being under the 10-13psi threshold the tank holds during fermentation or...
