Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Have you guys ever tried dry hopping without bags, and then dumping without cold crashing? I tried it for my last brew and it did not go too well. There was still a lot of hops in the conical after I dumped what I could. Would crashing help with that?

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Nice setup!!! Curious what the lowest temp you can get down to with an aquarium chiller is?

Survey: if you could do one thing over again regarding Homebrew would it be?

Listen to people that say buy once cry once.

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Does anyone use a cooler with just ice in it? How often do you have to change the ice? I was thinking about doing that until I can score an aquarium chiller off craigslist for cheap. That way I can just buy the cooler/pump for now and save my wallet a little pain.

    What are you drinking now?

A stout I brewed a while ago. It kinda sucked at first but its getting better.

Spike CF5 vs CF10 for 5 gallon batches.

Don't think you can really go wrong with either. Mine just came today! Super pumped to use it this weekend. But yeah...RIP wallet.

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Thanks. I think you have convinced me not to try keg in freezer then. Still considering the aquarium chiller route though upper 40s sounds okay to me. How hot was the room your fermenter was in?

Spike CF5 vs CF10 for 5 gallon batches.

I just had same decision to make and sent with the cf5. I just really don't have a desire to move to 10 gallon batches anytime soon and the cf5 is smaller and you won't to move the themowell around.

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

I'm thinking I wouldn't be able to chill it all the way to 35 with this method. I would have to leave the freezer at about 33 so my other beer didn't freeze as well. I guess I don't have much to lose trying this method as I would be able to reuse the pump for an aquarium chiller setup.

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

I want to avoid putting the conical in the chest freezer cause it will limit my access to all the valves and make everything hard to get to. I meant filling up a keg with water and running tubing out of the chest freezer to the chiller in the top of the conical.

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Just read through a lot of this thread. What kind of luck do you think i would have cooling the spike cf5 conical with five gallon batches with the keg in the chest freezer method? I'd be fine with not being able to cold crash but it would be nice to lager/get low enough temps to force carb with...

    Cold crashing in a conical

Hmm interesting. Maybe I need to rethink this. If I kept the fridge at 33F, insulated the lines and got the Neoprene jacket for the fermenter I wonder if I could get it to at least 65F. Not sure I want to try it if chances arent good though...

    Cold crashing in a conical

Interesting. Do you think I would be able to get it to like 55F for lagering? Even if I can't ill just use my brew bucket in my chest freezer to lager but it would be nice regardless.

    Cold crashing in a conical

Interesting thanks! I guess ill find out. If I can get it down to 50-55 degrees for lagering I will be happy, then I can just cold crash in my kegs. I had a few homebrews and ordered the CF5 tonight.

    CF5 Conical Now Available!!

Yeah I guess I just don't get it lol. Anyways, I ordered the fermenter with the gas manifold and transfer kit. Super pumped to get it!

    Cold crashing in a conical

I was thinking about ordering a Spike CF5 conical and I have a question about cold crashing. I was thinking about using my chest freezer, filling up a keg with cold water, setting it to 32 degrees, and running that water through the temp control lid with a pump. Realistically in a 50-60...
