    Bitter, Undrinkable Bottles

I do 305F for 2.5 hours. I got the idea from Palmer’s How to Brew. There’s a table of other temps and times.

    Bitter, Undrinkable Bottles

I rinse and clean the bottle at my kitchen sink immediately after pouring a beer and the let it drain in the dish rack. Eventually, it ends up the box with the others until the next time I bottle when I bake the bottles in my oven the day before bottling. I sit on a chair next to the open oven...

    Two dumb questions...

I use distilled water in my spray bottle of StarSan — lasts a very long time.

    Midwest Supply

I do think that’s fair, and had the same sort of experience with a different supplier. I’ve learned to wade through all the packing material of any package I receive. I have to say though that with the dwindling supply of home brew shops, I’m not gonna cross one off my list for that.

    Midwest Supply

Exactly. I live in the Twin Cities and both stores are terrific options for me. Pretty much all I need is there with an occasional exception. I’m sorry they aren’t perfect for everyone but I’m glad they’re here.

    Mash Tun

Before my AIO, I converted a round 10 G Igloo cooler with a ball valve and used a false bottom with my BIAB (The Brew Bag). The mash temp didn’t drop more than a couple of degrees in my kitchen. After mashing, I put the bag in a colander on top for the sparge. Sometimes I miss using it.

Hey, thanks for that! I’ll definitely check him out 😃

    Midwest Supply

NB and MS are local to me and they’re only game in town so selfishly speaking, I want them to succeed. I wish for everyone’s sake they’d figure out their shipping problems. When I stop by MS, I find them well stocked with a variety of merchandise and generally helpful, though not exceedingly so...

    Infected beer?

Sometimes I’m glad I don’t use clear fermenters — I like Speidel — otherwise I’d likely worry too much, lol. At least I can see the krausen line.

Do I need a utility sink?

I brew 5-6G in my condo kitchen and cleaning up with my standard double kitchen sink stinks. I’d give anything for a dedicated brewing space so I can’t imagine NOT installing a big-ass utility sink with a spray attachment.

    ANVIL FOUNDRY ALL-GRAIN BREWING SYSTEM

Glad to hear that you like it. I bought the first M&B a year before the Series 2 so I’m kind of bummed. The Series 2 doesn’t seem to get much attention and that seems a shame at its price point. Maybe I’m wrong about that but I sure don’t see it mentioned on HBT much at all. The Anvil Foundry...

    First brew: NB Caribou Slobber

Congrats on your first brew! A favorite of mine, having brewed the all grain version twice. Although it doesn’t resemble Newcastle for me at all — darker and more flavorful.

    Question for Minnesota extract brewers...

FWIW, I live in suburban Mpls and go to Cub Foods — use to purchase their RO but then was not sure how often they change the filter in their RO machine - someone on HBT said that’s important — so now I buy their distilled water. I believe you can buy a cheap,TDS meter on Amazon to test the RO...

    Wort- boil

Prior to buying a Brewer’s Edge Mash & Boil, I used an 8G kettle with Reflectix wrapped around it on an 1800W induction burner and got a healthy boil going. I live in a 3rd floor condo building and brew in the kitchen because I can’t do so on the balcony. getting 6G to a boil took some time but...

    When to refrigerate bottles

I’ve been considering that. I like having Belgians around most of the time so it might be worthwhile.

    When to refrigerate bottles

Thanks so much. Unfortunately, I live in a 3rd floor condo - no cellar!

    When to refrigerate bottles

I’m specifically interested in what’s best when it comes to a Belgian Dark Strong Ale or Belgian Trippel/Dubbel. Out of a 5+G batch, I like to drink a dozen or so after a month or two and I let the others sit at room temp (72F) with the idea of letting them age longer, from a few to several...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

I doubt very few brew their own beer to save money. That sounds boring to me. It is done becuase one enjoys THE PROCESS. Granted, there are budget processes up to extravagant, equipment-heavy methods for brewing your own beer, all determined by one budget or personal values.
