    Scorched mash and boil prevention

That sounds like a nice use of a hop spider I don’t use that much - great idea!

    Scorched mash and boil prevention

My efficiency is nailed down with AIO now so I am not using any extract with my all grain brews. Yesterday, I used that rocky Belgian candi sugar with 15 minutes to go (per the recipe). Perhaps it is some grain dust burning on the bottom although I use a BIAB in the malt pipe.

    Scorched mash and boil prevention

I’m still getting scorching with my Mash & Boil — just happened last night with a AG Belgian Tripel with hard candi sugar added at the end I stirred the hell out of it to keep it moving and to dissolve it as quickly as possible. Frankly, I’m sick of throwing my back into cleaning black crap off...

EXACTLY. Let other people “experiment” as some have said and hear about their results!

First time using dry yeast for beer

I don’t have the space for a separate fridge/fermentation center so I use this insulating jacket (from MoreBeer maybe?) with frozen water in 64oz juice bottles, using 2 - 4 of them at a. time. My Speidel fermenters have just a stick-on thermometer strip so I factor a few degrees higher for the...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

Yours may be the best post in the thread. In the 80s, I worked in a camera store on commission, one of a few family owned stores in the area. The staff was very knowldgeable about the products and photography. A few of us made some money here and there at photography. Some so-called customers...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

EXACTLY. if I’d been informed at the point of ordering, I would’ve made time to drive to the store. That’s a simple courtesy.

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

I placed my order with Midwest late Sunday night, 10/2. At that time, MW's website stated 10/7 for delivery. I received it today, 6 days late and shipping across town to my Mpls suburb is only ONE day. Hey, the liquid yeast was still cold! They let me know by email some days after I ordered it...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

Email I received today after emailing MW yesterday to inquire about my order: ”We apologize for the delay! We have been really swamped lately, and a bit shorthanded as well, and the result is that we are running behind schedule, particularly on the grain-room orders. We're all working hard to...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

Perhaps, but we’ve all been speculating about this for many weeks (months?) now and as far as I can tell, none of us knows the actual facts behind their issues. It doesn’t make sense to me they let these shipping issues go on for sooo long now if it’s just a matter of paying the help more money...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

I take your points after your opening statement but I live in the Twin Cities and there really aren’t small store alternatives to NB and Midwest. I am NOT assuming some nice mom and pop homebrew shops are going to pop up and take their place if they fail. Frankly, if the hobby becomes too...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

If the small stores are dwindling, why wouldn‘t you care if they went out of business tomorrow?? Let’s hope they figure things out. Yesterday, I received the dreaded email for a delay as well and I live across town from them in a Mpls suburb. Their store hours during the week are my work hours...

Or makes things more complicated than necessary.

Bottling carb issue with priming sugar vs fizz drops

Frankly, I’ve never picked up on any of my beer being over exposed to oxygen to the point of affecting flavor — but then I don’t brew highly hopped beers. I’ll never keg — I don’t have the space to deal with it and I brew for myself pretty much so bottling 5 gallons every so often isn’t that...

Bottling carb issue with priming sugar vs fizz drops

I’m thinking I’d like to do that too — skip the damn bottling bucket — seems unnecessary and another step to add oxygen I don’t want.

    Refurbished???

IMO, the word “used” should have been the only word used to describe this unit, meaning MoreBeer should have left the word “refurbished” off the description. Also, the crud build-up, which sounds significant, would make sense given the statement, “…and show signs of previous use.” However, a...

Bottling carb issue with priming sugar vs fizz drops

My biggest gripe is mixing corn sugar solution in the bottling bucket can give uneven results. I have improved though by stirring GENTLY (don’t want to introduce a lot of oxygen) but for a long enough time to give even distribution. I’m fine with doing this for my Belgian Ales as they need more...

Bottling carb issue with priming sugar vs fizz drops

I really didn’t think it necessary to start a new thread, so…. I’ve used NB’s carbonation drops but have found 1/4 to a 1/3 of them to be too big for a standard 12 oz beer bottle. I end up using a sanitized screw driver to push them in the rest of the way. I like using these for “regular beers”...

What is your favorite way to increase efficiency in Anvil foundry?

I do this with my Mash&Boil and it increased efficiency, especially with larger grain bills. I use a Wilser BIAB.
