Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Well it isn't odorless by any means, you can certainly tell I'm brewing in the basement. My wife says she can smell it on the first floor as well but it isn't bad, I can't even tell up there. It dissipates quickly though.

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

I don’t have an answer on the 1.5” version but this is way better than a hood. Quiet and no ductwork or holes cut in my house.

Different step mash schedules and their purpose

I am interested in learning more about what the different temps in step mash might achieve. I have read about acid, protein, beta and alpha rests but I want to find out what temps on either end of the range will do. For example I have seen step mash schedules start at 148 for 30 minutes then...

EZ-Boil mOUT setting w/ Recirculating eBIAB and Step Mashing

Attached is a picture. It’s about 2” from the element. I was concerned the longer probe would hit the element so I went with this probe.

EZ-Boil mOUT setting w/ Recirculating eBIAB and Step Mashing

I did a few runs from 144 to 158 this morning. I think I was touching the element before and measuring surface temp, not fluid temp around it. As long as I’m not touching the element I’m seeing temps around 160-161 through most of the step even at 100% power. There is a small section an inch...

EZ-Boil mOUT setting w/ Recirculating eBIAB and Step Mashing

I am using an EZ-Boil DSPR320 for a recirculating eBIAB system with a 5500 watt element. I did a trial run step mash with 6 gallons of water and the pump on full speed, I found that the temp in between the loops of the element got over 170 so I would be denaturing enzymes. This isn't a huge...

Who's NOT making IPAs and what are you brewing?

I just tapped a helles. I'm going to be doing a grodziskie soon. Before that it was bohemian pils, alt, oktoberfest, belgian golden ale. I like IPAs and am going to do one soon but so many breweries do a good job with IPAs that it's hard to justify the effort. Something like a good alt or...

    How unique are lubelski hops?

I'm planning on making a grodziskie soon and they call for lubelski hops. My local store (Northern Brewer/Midwest) doesn't have them but I have read that saaz is a substitute, which I already have on hand. I'm not thrilled with paying for shipping to get 2 oz of hops but will if I need to. Is...

How close can I solder a fitting next to another?

The first fitting was hot enough to have solder melting out the other side of the fitting. I think it looks like that because I kept feeding solder into it after it cooled a bit. I’m concerned trying to reheat it as it is currently holding water fine, I don’t want to screw it up and I don’t have...

How close can I solder a fitting next to another?

It is silver solder from brewhardware.com, there is no lead in it. I wouldn’t use lead electronic solder on plumbing either.

How long can I reuse a bottling bucket?

My bottling bucket is 10 years old, I don’t see a need to replace it. Edit: I just looked at my profile. I joined in 2006. So my bucket is 13 years old I guess. Has it really been that long?

How close can I solder a fitting next to another?

I have a pull through fitting for a ball valve on my kettle and I want to add a surface soldered weld spud to add a temp probe. How close can I solder the fitting without worrying about the other fitting’s solder melting and falling out? I want them close so the probe tip is between the dip tube...

    deep cleaning???

All of my fittings are soldered but on the hot side I never disassemble it. I wipe down the inside to get the gunk off, blow some water through the fittings and then let it dry. I'm not too worried about it being perfect on the hot side as everything gets boiled.

Induction Top for Just the Decoction Step

I’m moving to an indoor electric system as well and was just thinking about the same thing. Can you post links of what you were looking at? I’m interested in hear how this goes for you.

Dry yeast does not require rehydration and also does not require aeration

Are Safale and Fermentis packaged the same? If they are then could we treat Safale US-05 the same and get the same results? I use US-05 on IPAs and I’m wondering if skipping oxygenation will help retain more hop aromas. Edit: Nevermind, Fermentis makes Safale. They are the same.

Does element and dip tube relative position matter?

I believe the probe will stick into the kettle by an inch so I cut a piece of wire to visualize. The probe would be 2.5” from the element if I place between the outlet and element. Is it worth trying to return the probe to get it closer to the element? Otherwise if I put the probe by the tip of...

Does element and dip tube relative position matter?

Interesting. Well, I have the hardware to install the temp probe inline right after the dip tube. I would have preferred it in the kettle but I was reading that after the dip tube was best. The kettle would be nice so I could heat up strike water without running a pump. Maybe I should order a...

Does element and dip tube relative position matter?

I'm building an eBIAB system with a 15.5 gallon bayou classic. I was just marking off the positions of the dip tube and the element with the plan to drill and solder tonight then I started to wonder if their relative position matters. I'm using a 90 degree barb for the dip tube and a 5500 watt...
