    Yeast Starter Question

I've left a few starters on the plate overnight and pitched the whole thing the next day with good results although I do 1 liter starters that I step up once or twice depending on the volume I'm brewing I would imagine you'll be ok leaving it on the plate since you sanitized the stopper

    Hop sock

Thanks so far for the replies. An additional rookie question: If the airlock is pushing a bubble now and then then the head space is CO2. If oxidation was a threat if I swirled the wort would the air come from the wort itself?

    Hop sock

I'm dry hopping with one ounce each of amarillo and cenntenial pellets. Each has its own hop sock. Curious if the carboy should be swirled gently now and then since the hops are "contained" and not free floating throughout the liquid. Would aeration be a concern? Any benefit to swirling? I...

    Krausen on starter

I took my starter off the stir plate last night with the intention of putting it in the fridge overnight to cold crash, decant, and make a step up this am. My three year old took my attention and the flask stayed on the counter overnight. There is a krausen on top with a nice bed of yeast on...

    Keg purge and oxidation

Put 2 gallons of apricot ale into the corny and put it under 25lbs of psi overnight. This morning I backed the psi down to about 12psi when I realized I never purged the corny after the first time I connected it. Could that cause oxidation?

    Apricot concentrate

Thanks for the feedback. Yes this is apricot concentrate. Should I stir it in (gently of course)? I've always stirred my bottling sugar in with no problems. I won't use a secondary so would stirring cause problems with off flavors because of the trub? Or would it tend to help by rousing the...

    Apricot concentrate

I'm going to add some concentrate after fermentation is done. I was going to rack to a secondary on top of the concentrate. How long should it stay in secondary before bottling and kegging? Do I even need to use a secondary when adding concentrate?

What is the fastest fermentation you have experienced?

I brewed last Saturday. Used a starter with some harvested yeast and fermentation started on Sunday 10-12 hrs later. I noticed the airlock stopped bubbling late Monday afternoon. I know enough to not judge fermentation only by air lock activity but... Curiosity got the best of me and I popped...

    Rough brew day

Sounds like it was better than a good day at work ;) I brewed an IPA recently that for whatever reason I decided to boil for 90 minutes. I put all my additions in while mentally using a 60 minute boil instead of looking at my timer and double checking the recipe the way I normally do. It still...

Can it be Seen as Unprofessional to Brew Beer?

I'm a retired blue collar worker who went back to college and now I'm a white collar professional. For a short time I was curious how colleagues and clients would look at me after hearing I was a home brewer. I shared some beers with some clients and they keep asking when my next batch will be...

    "you won't save money homebrewing"

This is one of the big reasons I like to brew. I have a high stress job and when I know I'm going to brew stress goes down considerably. Also for me brewing with friends, family or just me and my 3 year old son relieves stress and I love being with those who are closest to me. Agree 1000%...

    Beginner as it gets

Here's what worked for me... First I researched if I wanted to start my brewing hobby all grain or extract. Read this website and others and watched videos on you tube. I decided to start with extract knowing I'd move up to all grain or BIAB (which I have done) Researched extract kits online...

    Suck at IPA

My first few batches were IPAs and they turned out really good. I use RO water, make a yeast starter with fresh yeast and a stir plate, use an aeration stone and O2 or shake your fermentation bucket like it owes you money. Find a simple standard issue recipe and follow it to a "T" and of course...

    Is my scoby still healthy?

Looks good to me. In fact it looks kinda like ours. We keep extra scobys and rotate them out from time to time. I don't think they have a shelf life as long as they don't get infected and are only subject to tea (not any kind of flavor additions like juice or fruit).
