    Hops are already up...

Today I noticed a small shoot on my Magnum rhizom that I just put down last week. Mine are potted too so I guess I'll be watching the weather pretty close as well.

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Whats the story on storing pre-milled? It's is not available where I shop so that means that I would have to order online and may want to order in bulk to save on shipping costs.

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

First attempt at this method last night. Biggest problem, I think, was the malt not being properly milled. I don't have a mill so I just used a rolling pin and my kitchen counter. I don't even know what properly milled grain looks like so I think I may have gone a little light b/c I was...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Yep, American Brown Ale I used beertools.com website to piece this recipe together. The default AAs were: Cascade = 5.5, Williamette = 5, Mt. Hood = 5 making the IBUs = 31. Is there another variety of hops that you would recommend? 31 is middle ground for the style but I could easily be...

Easy Partial Mash Brewing (with pics)

Alright, gonna try this this weekend for my first non-kit brew and wanted to run this by you DB (and anyone else who cares to comment) to make sure my thinking is on point. I hope it's not way off b/c I have put quite a bit of thought into it. Here we go. 2.5 gal batch 3.0 gal boil (60...

    When can I start?

Hmmm. I ordered from freshops.com and the site said to allow 7-10 days for delivery. I'll shoot'em an email to see what's what. Either way, thanks.

    When can I start?

I ordered three rhizomes ealier this evening and expect them to arrive by early next week. I live in Northern KY and was wondering when I should get them started. I am assuming ASAP, but I also have spring fever in the worst way. Anyway, due to current living quarters and uncertainty of how...

    First Wheat

@ Android The yeast packet that came w/ the kit is Danstar MUNICH. The yeast packet directions say to suspend it in warm water and add that way, but the directions in the Brewers Best box say to sprinkle it on the wort. In the past I have just sprinkled the yeast on the wort and have had...

    First Wheat

Gonna brew my first wheat tomorrow for an outing at the end January. My first two attempts (IPA & Red Ale) turned out well, but I just wanted to post and see if anyone had any words of wisdom. I'm not quite ready for making custom recipes as of yet so I have been using Brewers Best kits...

A beginning brewers dissertation...reinventing the wheel, impatience, and overdrafts.

Ha!! Very good read. I agree w/ the comments about learning from experience, but at the same time I couldn't help but think of the following quote: Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for...

    Noob Question about boil size

I'm a noob too, and using your example, I have been using the 3 gal of water method. My brews have turned out good as far as I can tell. Never thought of it the other way but I guess that could be a valid question. Can't help you w/ the other question but I look forward to the answer.

    Couple questions and a thanks

@ Revvy: Haha. No, I'm not bottle conditioning upside down. I'm just talking about empty bottles. I read the bottling tips before my last bottling day and it was really helpful. Thanks again. I tend to buy a variation of 22oz single beers for "research" purposes when not drinking my own...

    Couple questions and a thanks

I'm two batches into my homebrewing career and have learned a lot from these boards. Glad I found this great resource. Thanks I am in the process of collecting enough bottles to have enough 22 oz keeper bottles as well as some 12 oz bottles that I can travel with that I'm not too worried...

Friends don't let friends brew drunk!

I have done this too. I'm not handy enough to use silicon tho'. I just wrapped a rubber band around the bottom of the airlock several times and shoved it down into the lid. I had music in the airlock in less than 12 hours and the IPA tasted fine so it all worked out.

My friends don't care for my homebrew

Not worried or anything. Just found it interesting that someone's experience was so much different [read: opposite] than mine. That's all.

My friends don't care for my homebrew

The stoners group blew me out of the water. My experiences have been the exact opposite. The stoners I know all seem to dispise BMC and drink Import, Microbrew exclusively. When I break out the homebrew they are usually all over it.

    Favorite Christmas/ Winter Beers

Morgan Street pub in St. Louis had a winter brew several years ago that I thought was really good. It was before my days of brewing so I couldn't tell you the name or any specifics. Sorry. All I remember was a slight/moderate cinnamon aftertaste.

    Brewery names--what's your story?

Byson Stone brewery. Byson Stone is a name some my friends gave to bar patron that they said was my "bizarro world" counterpart. When I began brewing, the name came up and a logo w/ a Bison and Rock on the logo was the vision. I have an artist working on an official logo for T-shirts...
