Adjusting grain bill for leftover in kettles

I typically have about 1 gallon of wort left in my various kettles/coils/tubes when I am done brewing. In essence arent I brewing a 6 gallon batch and not a 5 gallon batch? I do end up with 5 gallons in my fermenter since I compensate for this but should I change my recipes from 5-6 so I dont...

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

I had uses solenoid valves and hate them for anything that has wort go through it. I’m going to switch the last one out to ball valves. They are really slow but I can deal with that. I am devising a cheap way to somewhat accurately know where the swing is. Pics soon! i am so lazy with that!

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

OMG I havent brewed since 11/10. things are still working. Im going to add some new features but this is a great setup. I know i havent been the best posting pictures but life got in the way. Soon to come some awesome code changes and a few tweaks to the layout. For $15 I get gallons of awesome...

    Automated HERMS system

as far as fuses you want to add as many as you feel comfortable. A single short taking out everything wont be a good thing. Remember though that most fuses/diodes wont be quyick enough to protect the troller so keep those relays in the middle!

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

Sorry I missed this question. Its the same as what the brewtroller folks use. Copper/SS tube going down into the kettle with a constant stream of air to compensate for heat. In between the air pump and the bubbler is a differential air pressure sensor (fancy sounding) which gives a reasonable...

Im sure being a vendor sponsor on here would help!

    Automated HERMS system

One more thing. These valves have the highest flow rating because the cv plate in them is almost nonexistent. You could buy one with a lower CV rating and just pull the disk out. Probably will save u a fee $$.

    Automated HERMS system

I got them from midwest BAS http://www.midwestbas.com Belimo B315+TR24-3-T US $95/ea No flow problems at all. They are much better then the solenoids. They do take ~95 seconds to swing and need 24vac. A cheap transformer can do that for the 5 valves. It's nice to because they arent powered...

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

I use it mostly for measuring and when there is no grain in there. It was like $5-$10 to add it in. I also use it to shut my pumps off when the MLT is empty. The sensor works fine for that since there is a false bottom. Im using a .netmf C# uC from Fez/GHI.

    Automated HERMS system

I switched to just 4 3 way belimos and 2 or 3 of the old solenoids and it works great. Much better flow as well. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/lazy-automated-brew-system-labs-204758/

    Electric heating element short?

I phrased it wrong. I meant the part that heats up not the terminals.

    Electric heating element short?

Is it ok if the electrodes of the heating element touch? Does it short it in anyway? Im talking about the long black probes that go into the kettle.

    Kind of confused

Good question. I believe 5-6 gallons. I forget the exact size! I made a 800ml starter. I will admit there wasn't a whole lot of space left ion the carboy. Probably 1/2 gallon of dead space. I think since I will be playing with starters that I should go the blow off tube method.

    Kind of confused

OK. So I checked on my carboy and there is a solid cake of yeast in the airlock and about 2 inches thick all around the outside of the carboy. it's almost done fermenting so I dont feel too bad but, is this because I pitched too much yeast? Also is there a way to avoid this next time?

    Kind of confused

I did 1 liter with a stir plate and it went nuts. Pretty cool to see it work. I stirred it for about 24 hours. It's bubbling like mad!

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

Before I brew I run water heated to 180 with iodine through the whole system then out of those pipes. Pipes is misleasding they are high temp silicone tubing. I also leave the output to the fermenter in the BK during the boil. And during the mash I will have water in the BK at a high temp with...

    Lazy Automated Brew System (LABS)

This worked great. I needed to add 2 checkvalves and I removed the BK coil for a plate chiller. Much cleaner and very fast cool down. My code is working great as well. I keep adding more automation to everything. I do like to do a 2 or 3 temperature infusion mash which I will program in next.
