Brewing Beer at Home in the 1800s

"But here occur some of the nicest points of all; namely, the degree of heat that the water is to be at, before you put in the malt. This heat is one hundred and seventy degrees by the thermometer. If you have a thermometer, this is ascertained easily; but, without one, take this rule, by which...

    My First AG Pour!! (APA)

Congrats! I just cracked my first ever homebrew yesterday (also my first all grain as I jumped straight in) and it was excellent. It's pretty amazing to make something yourself that's as good as a commercial brew.

American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

Brewed this up yesterday. I made a 1.5L starter with the yeast but I only made it about 24 hours before pitching. The yeast was definitely working on the starter, releasing lots of CO2 whenever I swirled it, but no signs of activity from the blowoff hose on my bucket yet. I was hoping for a...

New post a picture of your pint

HUGE milestone for me... Cracked my first ever homebrew while brewing my 2nd batch today. A nice APA. 4 weeks in primary and 10 days in bottles so far. I just had to 'sacrifice' one so I put it in the fridge last night! The rest of the bottles are going to condition for another week or two...

"Pro" brewers who make beers with obvious flaws

I have only really had "pro" beer that was bad one time - that was at the Solvang Brewing Co. in Solvang, CA. I went in with a lady friend of mine and asked for a few samples from their taps - the girl ordered a stout - after our first sips we glanced at each other with horrified expressions...

How Do They Know They Were Drinking Ale?

Photography was extremely new in 1844. Around 1829-1830 was when the first (very grainy) photographs were made. That photograph has very good resolution for 1844. The subjects would have to be posed, and all in all taking a photograph was a very serious thing with lots of time and work...

Too much Tettnag; must brew more beer.

I did not know that, just finished off a couple of sixers. Sure enough! Says right on the neck label. That is a pretty tasty brew - I'd definitely be interested in making something along the same lines in the future when I have lagering capability.

American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

Just placed an order from the LHBS for this recipe. Hopefully it'll be delivered Thursday and I can make the starter that same day then brew on Saturday. Really looking forward to brewing this and drinking it as it gets hotter come spring!

whats the worst brewing accident you have witnessed or been a part of?

After just a couple of months reading the homebrew forums I am scared to death of glass carboys! I get nervous just looking at them on the shelves when I visit the LHBS!

whats the worst brewing accident you have witnessed or been a part of?

First time I used my wort chiller I ran water through it to leak check the hoses, then put it in the boiling wort for the last 5 minutes. When I ran more water through it to chill the wort it pushed out leftover water, which was at boiling temperature, and the outlet hose sprayed me right across...

    What's in your fermenter????

Interesting. I won't judge you for being a fan of Medalla - I live in PR right now and I have drank a lot of Medalla. Nothing better at the beach! I'm homebrewing so I'll have access to something other than Medalla or Coors Light! I currently do not have anything fermenting. I am trying to...

    Sam Adams Hopology 12 pack

I was going to post the exact same thing! I just bottled a batch of homebrew and at least 30 of the bottles I used were previously latitude 48 bottles. He did post in 2012 so maybe the recipe changed since then.

    better bottles

I found a video on youtube that was very helpful, and uses the same process mentioned above. 2-3 cups of warm water, a bit of PBW and a clean cotton or microfiber cloth. Spin and shake around. Takes all the gunk out in less than a minute. Give it a good rinse and let it dry until next time...

Why does there appear to be so much anxiety about brewing?

Before I brewed my first batch I literally had nightmares. Almost every night for a week. And I knew what RDWHAHB meant and had taken it to heart! For a newbie (especially going all grain on the first batch) there is just a lot to think about. There are a lot of steps and one doesn't want to...
