What does your HBT name mean?

I'm a Virginia Tech grad....and we are called the Hokies. I also make beer in my home...so I consider myself a home brewer. Hokie+home brewer = Hokiehomebrewer. Not very creative.

    No head

And another good article on head retention. http://beersmith.com/blog/2008/06/25/enhancing-beer-head-retention-for-home-brewers/

    No head

Might sound silly but make sure your glass is clean. http://www.ibabuzz.com/bottomsup/2008/10/28/beer-101-first-be-sure-the-glass-is-clean/ “Finally, in a well-made beer, you have a proper head of foam. It’s an integral part of enjoying a glass of beer.’’ But, Lewis...

Lurker turned poster from outside Philly

Agreed. It seemed that every time I had a question and "googled" it, I would end up on HBT. Figured I might as well sign up and contribute!

Lurker turned poster from outside Philly

Had been lurking on this site for awhile and finally decided to sign up so I could ask all my noob questions on the beginners forum. I have 4 batches under my belt thus far and much of the success I've had has to do with information I've gotten from this site. Cheers.

Dry hops. Does this look right?

I hear ya. I try not to be critical of UVA but you're right, most of their fans act like VT are a bunch of country bumpkins and treat VT like a community college. Funny thing is most of the ones acting like intellectuals never went to UVA in the first place! You guys are killing it in...

Dry hops. Does this look right?

Ahh. VT grad myself. W&L is a very good school (as is UVA obviously). I'm not from VA so I didn't grow up with the VT/UVA rivalry so aside from a sporting rivalry I don't really have much "hate" for UVA haha.

Dry hops. Does this look right?

Haha I don't plan on it! UVA fan? Well I won't hold that against ya.

Dry hops. Does this look right?

Thanks guys. Pellets in a sanitized bag sounds like the way I'll go from now on.

Dry hopped my DIPA with citra ugh

Just bottled an IPA yesterday. Used Warrior as my bittering hop but Citra and Amarillo for flavor and aroma. Finished it off by dry hopping an ounce of Citra and an ounce of Amarillo. Here is what it looks like non-carbed. I like the color.

You guys do realize... (overhyped beers)

If you're drinking a Hopslam in late May then it's way past it's fresh date. Now if you're disappointed in a HT which is a year round beer then there is no hope for you.

    Best Brew Shop Ever

Agree with Hunter. Most important is a friendly and intelligent staff. Having a wide variety of fresh ingredients and equipment is important but I can order that stuff online and in many cases I can get it cheaper online. When I'm going to a home brew shop it is usually to ask questions about...

    Help with recipe

How big is your container? If you have a 5 gallon pot then boil 3.5-4 gallons and then top up to 5 gallons after boil is finished. If you have something bigger and can do a full boil then go with 5.75 gallons and boil down to 5 gallon.

Dry hops. Does this look right?

I have no idea...when he recommended whole leaf I mentioned I was hesitant to use them as they seem to be messy and absorb a lot of liquid. He mentioned that was part of the process, can't be avoided or something a long those lines. I walked in with the mindset that I was going to be dry...

http://www.whitelabs.com/beer/homebrew/beginners-attenuation-and-flocculation-definitions ATTENUATION: Yeast is responsible for turning sweet wort into what we call "beer". Yeast consume the sugar in wort, and turn that sugar into CO2, alcohol, and flavor compounds. When yeast finish the...
