    Yeast Starter Cell Count Question

Can I ask where you get your info?

    Are all starters created equally?

Hey, I would like to brew a PA or IPA, divide it into 5 (1) gallon jugs and compare 5 different yeasts. I've been trying to think of the best way to save the remainder of the yeast packets. I think saving the initial yeast would be easier than washing each of the 5 (1) gal batches, but what do...

One week in primary & re-using yeast

Sounds fine to me. Do you just brew a low gravity beer, and then pitch a higher gravity onto that yeast cake?

Failed To Calculate Cells in Yeast Starter

This is a really good video about yeast; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vELwUsBmWQ if you want to nerd out a bit. Also the book: Yeast, by Chris White is excellent. "under pitching" (i.e. <0.75mill/mL/*Plato) will give you more yeast character, but with a really clean strain like 1056...

    Are all starters created equally?

The yeast websites have tons of info. Whitelabs.com says pretty much what other people have said: Typical Starter Volumes for 5 gallons: To activate the yeast: 1 pint (with 1/4 cup DME) To revitalize yeast past its Best Before Date: 2 pints (with 1/2 cup DME) To brew a high gravity beer...

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

    2. Real Extract Ethanol has a density of 0.79 g/ml at 20 °C, so its presence in beer, along with the loss of sugars due to fermentation, also reduces the specific gravity of beer relative to wort. The "Real Extract" (RE, in °P) is a measure of the sugars which are fermented and accounts for the...

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. My thoughts were that the juice fermented to completion, and http://www.brewersfriend.com/abv-calculator/ puts a 1.052 down to a 0.990 change at 8.14% ABV. Then I assumed that the raspberries would have only added to that amount, I didn't consider that...

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

well, the FG with a hydrometer reads 1.010ish, and brewersfriend.com puts the ABV at 5.51 from a 1.052 'wort'. where did you get the 4.25 ABV reading from?

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

I know a refractometer or hydrometer are not accurate in an alcoholic solution. The question was whether or not fruit can some how bind alcohol. thanks

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

gravity now is 1.020 with a refractometer.

    Raspberries soaking up alcohol?

I mixed 5 gal treetop juice (OG 1.052) with nottingham yeast, let it go 10 days at 68F. Then racked onto 5lbs fresh frozen raspberries, and 9 days after that I racked to another container. I let that sit in a carboy for 6 months, then kegged. Now I'm drinking it, and after 3 pints I'm not...

Help with All Grain planning using BeerSmith

JLeuck64 - did you just boil the wort, sanitize the jar, and then keep it in the fridge? How long do you leave it in the fridge before using? If I brewed more often that would probably just fine. Drew Beechum makes 5 gal of a weak ale before making a strong IPA type beer, and I think he just...

Help with All Grain planning using BeerSmith

Hi, I would like to do an all grain mash where I can run off about 4 quarts of 1.080 wort (for yeast starters in the future), and then run off 6 gal of 1.050 for the beer I'm brewing. I have beer smith, but I'm not really sure how to figure out how much grain I need. thanks -Also, am I...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Does anyone know what happens if you pitched Wyeast Roselare in the beginning? I don't know if the juice has the precursors to make the finished product more sour. Any info is appreciated.... Thanks

    Cider fermented with Roselare

I'm thinking of mixing up: 5 gallons fresh pressed juice from a local orchard 1 lb raisins 3 lbs local raspberries and pitching one package Wyeast Roselare. Has anyone ever used roselare on apple cider? Since the mix contains S. Cerevisiae (which will drop out after a couple...

    thermometer accuracy

Well thanks for all the replies. I ended up ordering :http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0021AEAG2/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 They claim it has a +/- 2F accuracy, which is good enough for me.

    thermometer accuracy

Hi, with my last brew I used 2 floating thermometers and a new long stem thermometer from the LHBS. During the mash the 3 of them gave me 3 different readings with a 20F spread, so I have no idea which one is correct. Today I brewed, and I used an IR thermometer from amazon (Etekcity...
