    Dry hopping in primary help!

I'm thinking dropping a sack with marbles in it might unsettle a lot of the trub too. Not bad if you were planning on letting it sits a few weeks, or cold crashing, but doesn't really appeal to me.

    Dry hopping in primary help!

Just to add to my own curiosity, I've read to add sanitized marbles to the sack to force the hops to sink to the bottom. Is there any advantage to this versus just throwing in the sack? Is it better to let them sit on top or bottom?

    Secondary alternatives??

Ok thanks. I wasn't sure if there was any "magic" going on when racking to secondary. The directions say to rack to secondary, add coffee, let it sit for a week then bottle. But if you guys dont see any benefit to this, then that saves me having to buy a glass carboy. Although Midwest is...

    Secondary alternatives??

So I would like to get a coffee flavored stout extract kit, but It calls for adding the brewed coffee after racking the beer to a secondary. I do not currently own a secondary. Can I just add the coffee to the primary after fermentation is complete? Or mix it in at bottling time? What are...

How can I get clear beer in this situation

Move your fermenting ops upstairs and use a swamp cooler for temps? Or just bottle downstairs? Why do you need to move the bucket back up to the second floor? Going up and down stairs with 5+ gallons sounds like an accident waiting to happen, and a lot of beer that could be wasted ;)

Noble trappist extract kit color way off?

I'm wondering, since this was the first time I only boiled 1/3 of the lme in the 60 minute boil, if Midwest assumes that you boil all the lme for 60, which would help in darkening the beer. I added the other 2/3 at flame out. They tell you to boil everything for 60... Oh well, it tastes good...

Noble trappist extract kit color way off?

I just did a gravity check on my noble trappist I got from Midwest. Og was 1.056, right around 1.017 now. Tastes good, smells good, but the color seems way off. It's been in the primary for about 12 days now, ferm temps kept steady in mid to upper 60's, 66 now. It's a lot lighter then I had...

    Yeasty beer

Sorry, I must have gotten you mixed up with someone else. I too do not like yeasty beer, so if I determine fermentation is done, and not dry hopping, I should go ahead and bottle? Most people on here do say to leave it for 3 weeks or longer if you are not cold crashing, which I cannot do. I...

    Aluminum pot and oxy clean?

I let it soak in some oxy for like an hour then scrubbed and rinsed well. The "layer" was still there, and might even be darker then before! Although that may be from use, as this is the 3rd brew ive used it for. Ill probably boil or bake it again, just in case, and try not to use oxy on it...

What about using starsan on it? Since starsan is acidic...

    Aluminum pot and oxy clean?

I will check the thread. What does "pitted" mean? Thanks!

    Aluminum pot and oxy clean?

What should the protective layer look like after boiling water in it? Mine looks slightly brownish or dark grayish. I used oxyclean to clean it. Is it too late to save it, can I reboil or bake it to get the protective layer back?

    Aluminum pot and oxy clean?

What does oxy clean do to an aluminum pot that is negative? It oxidizes it? What does this mean in noob speak? What is best way to clean it?

    Yeasty beer

Yooper, you've stated before that you usually leave your brews in the primary for atleast 3 weeks and don't use a secondary to get clear beer an allow the yeast to clean up. A little confused now. So do you rack to secondary or bottle as soon as fermentation has ceased? Btw, it might have...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

I ordered a speckled pale ale, or at least that is what the menu said, not the brown ale... Seems like there's a lot of beginners luck. My first one was good, second was better, then has gone downhill. i didn't really start researching anything till I found this website/app. Seems like I...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

This time I did use lme from a plastic tub. Got the kit from Midwest per everyone advising me to. All previous batches were from canned lme. I guess this is what added to my disappointment, cause I switched vendors and thought I'd gotten better fresher ingredients, and would taste the...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

Haha funny how people have such dramatic perceptions in taste. It was a draft and after the bartender poured it, it had a hazy/cloudiness to it that seemed to fizz away to the top as foam. I was even a few beers deep when I had it and still didnt like it...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

I enjoy a bass. They are good. Old speckled hen was hard to choke down. It could have gone bad. I can't imagine it gets ordered often...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

I just tried an old speckled hen British pale ale to compare it to my brew. I was not impressed. In fact, I liked mine better, twang and all. I will not be having an old speckled hen again. Really bad after taste, made my throat felt weird, almost sore. There any other British style pales...

How long did it take you until you made a awesome batch?

Used safale s-04 on this one. And I do usually get rather high fg readings. 1.015-1.020 for most of my lme extract kits. But I was told that is pretty common for extract kits...
