    1 gallon mead batch questions

Yes, you can ferment in 1 gallon jugs. Are yours plastic or glass, though? Mead won't foam like beer, unless you've got berries or similar something in it. Some top off in secondary and during bulk ageing. http://brew.stderr.net/mead_og_calc.html - Mead OG calculator, although don't trust it...

First-timer - two questions about yeast

Good, you found your way to this forum. I was going to suggest it at Runristare's forum - but it slipped my mind, as many things does. Lycka till!

    mead virgin

Normally, me neither. But after having a taste of the unfinished product, I'm gonna have to say I'm pleasantly suprised. Tried it once in a plain mead, and it was HORRIBLE. But with a scientific mind, one result is never enough - and you have to make sure what others tell you are true. I'm...

    mead virgin

Speaking of recommended newbie recipes, I'm doing a cyser vartiant of JOAM. It was a spur of the moment thing, so I just threw everything together. Baking yeast (just a pinch) Leftover liquid honey I usually use for cooking/baking 1 unknown apple (it occured to me after a while not all apples...

Homebrew shops not supportive of Military

Wait, how is 2-ish euro per kilogram for malt too expensive? Or an all grain recipe kit for 24 euro? Malt is generally 3-4 euro per kilogram here. And I have never seen an all grain kit in Sweden. http://www.brouwland.com/en/ http://www.hobbybrauerversand.de Although, after a quick look, the...

    mead virgin

I haven't used Munton, but Coopers ale yeast in mead. A bit too spicy for mead IMHO, but interesting. Fermented to 15%, which really suprised me at that time. Haven't seen Red Star in Sweden.

    mead virgin

Depends on your yeast, look up various yeast strains. See what temperatures they ferment at, and when they start to produce off flavors and how much alcohol they can handle. I started out with ale yeast, and... well, I did not know much at all about how yeast worked back then... it was a...

    mead virgin

Personally, I wouldn't recommend any fruit/berry meads or anything spiced. Just get a taste for plain mead, and if you don't like it - flavor it. But on the other hand, fruits and berries makes it a whole lot easier to ferment. Mix water and honey until you hit a good OG, add yeast and/or...

    My old man's electric rig

Bloody 'ell, a bunch of things went wrong on the test brew. First of all, it sprung yet another leak - in the worst place, this time. Just above the electric heating element. Luckily, we noticed it fast enough and he fixed it, after several hours. Someone had messed with the mill, so we got...

    Preserving honey

I haven't noticed any difference in taste after 1-2 years (totally forgot about a 4.5 kg pail I had a while back. xD).

    Purchasing a LHBS

Don't have a LHBS, but then again with only 3000 people in my town I don't expect to. But there is one in the next city over, which went bankrupt a while back - suprised it took so long. They hardly stocked anything, and everything was over priced. Only thing worth buying there was dry yeast -...

Possibly the best beer I've ever had!

Bloody hell that sounds awesome. I'm getting damn tired of only being able to buy a fraction of all the awesome American beers in this backwater country.

Yup, just have to disconnect it. But one one the hoses started leaking so we're gonna have to fix that first.

    Burgers and beers

I know I'm in the minority here, but personally I don't like to mix beer (or wine, cider/whatever) and food. I think they're better off enjoyed solo.

    It's 230V, and like I said it's from a water boiler.

    My old man's electric rig

Seems to be having problems reaching mash out temp. Any suggestions? We'll be isolating the kettles, but I don't think that'll be enough. It's currently at 68.2°c. There's 10 liters of water in the HLT, should not take two hours to heat up to mash temps. I'm guessing the universal thermostat is...

    My old man's electric rig

I taught him how to make beer, then when he got bored of BiAB (it can get a bit cumbersome and messy) he made this. The HLT is 25 liters, and the MLT is 36 liters. Heating element is a 2.2 kW water boiler. He's gonna need a false bottom there. Looks a bit scary! German...
