Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

I see. That would be an interesting idea to try. Oddly enough that episode has made me want to make a chicha. If I ever get around to it I'll give it a shot. :)

Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

I tend to think they did the entire chewing/spitting thing in part because it makes a great advertisement/marketing ploy. Not saying that is a bad thing. It is just really interesting to people who have never heard of it. My family thought it was cool and gross at the same time. It really peaked...

    ALUMINIUM mash tun ?

I use an aluminum pot to mash and boil in. As long as you build up the protective oxide layer on them the first time before you use 'em I think it is fine.

$1000 available for home brewing setup...

If I had that kind of cash I'd probably get the minimal amount of equipment to constitute a "nice" brew setup. Probably some 15 gallon pots, a nice mash tun, a brew stand, wort chiller, etc. Middle-Class type setup if you get me.

    Sanitizer Question regarding Blow-Off Tube

I use water with some Star-San in my blow-off bucket.. Any sanitizer will work. Probably the only time you could use a bit of bleach too.

    Boil off

Lucky you, same thing happened to me today. I came up with 7 gallons of wort and it was boiled down to 4.5 gallons. I pitched and forgot it. I wouldn't add any water to your wort, but that is my opinion. I'm happy with 4.5 gallons of beer. I made some mistakes too. I hope we both made epic...

    1st Brew

I take a strainer used for strained flour and that kind of that. I then put a grain bag in that strainer. I pour/rack my wort through the double-filter and I'm generally okay. My only problem is flow of wort because sometimes the filter gets really clogged. If you have a grain bag you can try...

Spent Grain? Make Your Best Friend Cookies!

Just made some of these with for my dog: Buttercup Used 6 cups of grains and 4 eggs. Everything else the same.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just finished my first all-grain. An American Pale Ale recipe I came up with. Very fun.

    How many of you......

Don't have a SWMBO and I don't seem to have that problem. I brew with family around though and they seem to enjoy it.

someone actually put bacon in their secondary....

Bacon with Beer?! My goodness...that is amazing. I wonder how well dehydrated meats would work? Should be too much fat on them if properly handled. I must try this sometime.

Why is beer infinitely better after work?

Working for family has had its privileges. Beer after a job well done with everyone is pretty amazing. Don't necessarily need an explanation of why it is just so, so good. It just needs to be good.

    Is aluminum okay?

I've read they should be fine as long as you build up a passive oxide layer on them first. Just fill them up with water and boil for 30 minutes. I did this today, after cleaning, some aluminum pots and they look good to brew with. I used some dawn dish soap to clean mine. I wouldn't recommend...

1st All Grain Brew in a Bag (BIAB)

Looks like a very cool brew day. I'm doing my first All-Grain tomorrow and I've got some ice ready to cool down the wort. Going over your process and pictures is helping me plan my day tomorrow.

    What are you drinking now?

Currently having a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Very delicious. Has a wonderful hop aroma and what I can describe as floral-like. I get a taste of the malted grain too. Lucky find around my parts.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm doing an experimental Pale Ale recipe tomorrow sometime (depends on when FedEx shows up). It is going to be my first All-Grain too, so I am really excited. I found some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale at the local quicki-mart (a lucky find). So I am set to go.

Mr. Brussel Sprout... why didn't I like you when i was a kid???

I prefer to cook mine in some butter with onions until they're browned really well. For extra kick, cook some bacon extra crispy and crumble on them. Very delicious.

    I have big brewing balls

AC/DC indeed. :rockin: Looks like a good technique you have going there OP. I'll be sure to practice the way of the grain balls.

Brew Masters on Discovery w/ Sam Calagione

I enjoyed the show and it was entertaining. I would like to see some more technical aspects added into the show so I could learn something. I can't really pass judgement seeing as this was the pilot episode so it makes sense to have a "welcoming-warmer" attitude.
